Ok.... after doing a little research, I quickly realized that my comment "I assume that is more of a long and tedious process than a hard one per say" was way off, so sorry about that...

still want to help though...

At this point i'm strickly a Mod user and compatibility is major for me. I like a huge salad of mods with everything I can possibly fit. I'm not opposed to visiting forums and playing around with files for bug resolution since it's a great way to learn. And that's why I love BP and everything related to it.

Allright, first for the newest versions of pretty much every mod, a good site is this one:

What you need to play Baldur's Gate 1 with the Baldur's Gate 2 engine is what's called the Baldur's Gate trilogy mod. This is the newest version: BGT-weidu and the actual file is called BGT100-Install.rar

Now with that, you want to add the baldurash fix called baldurash-weidu v1.5.

The other BG2 great and very big mod is the big picture (newest is called BP176.rar)
The big picture includes various fixes, a vastly improved AI and a lot of other great stuff.
The great thing about BP is that it is compatible with the other big mods : The darkest day(TDD v1.10), Shadows over soubar(SoS v1.10), Check the bodies(Ctb v1.7), Tortured souls(TS-BP v6.04.01) and Never ending journey(NEJ2 v42 +patch NEJ2 v602). (Note that you have to choose between Check the bodies and the Never ending journey since they are not compatible)
All these mods includes a lot of new quests, encounters, Npcs and a lot more.

You'll also need the worldmap v5

but in general it goes a little like this

1) BG2+ToB+patch26498 and BG1+TotSC+patch5512

2) BD-weidu v1.5 (the baldurash fix)

3) Ctbv1.7, TDDv1.10, SoSv1.10 (if you're going for Ctb instead of NEJ wich is what I personally like...)

4) TS-BPv6.04.01

5) Any other compatible mod (make sure they are or you can ask me and I'll try my best)

6) BPv176
