To be honest, I don't like the (original) idea. It is a somewhat farfetch'd. When adding features like that the gameplay shifts from a RPG to a how-to-manage-your-items-and-skills game. If you want it a bit more realistic then how do you explain that Minsc can carry 20 sets of armour in his tiny-backpack!

Like others have said it adds to many items.
However in the case of thieves a new tab (like the spellbook) for thievingskills is not a bad idea.

I like the idea of an quest te find you're familiar instead of just summoning one as is done currently.

NPC's defently must have familiars! The raven for Hear'dalis is a good idea a kind of a scouting option maybe?
And I deffently like the idea of the Ice weasel. Maybe Minsc can give Jan a familiar since Jan is trying so hard to steal Boo from him.

And more importantly more interactions between the familiars (pc's and npc's) with theire 'owner' and other NPC's

A long long time ago I had the crazy idea of creating a NPC with his own familiar, a Gauth. Never got around to it sadly.

@Awake: in the gate distict the merchant you saved from that guy who askes him for money has a find familiar scrol for sale.

Part of it is actually a great idea!
I've always found te keep-stronghold a bit boring. It would be great if you could send some people who were in need or without a home too you're keep. (like the slave kids in the slums)
Maybe even adding en new area where a little village is build (or have an area where you can actually see the village being under water). And witch, you as PC need to defend it from time to time.
