I'm using a laptop that has Windows Vista installed. The first time I installed BG2 on this computer, everything worked perfectly fine and I had no problems at all with anything whatsoever. I have been using the same set of discs for over five years without ever having this specific error before.
I think I may have gotten a virus or something on my laptop that was causing random things to crash - I got rid of that as far as I can tell. So I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it. I'd been getting random blue screen of deaths beforehand, sometimes while BG2 was running, sometimes not. But I think I solved that problem as my laptop stopped acting weirdly and yeah.
So in my game I'd gotten to Suldanessellar. Whenever I went inside any of the buildings there it would give me a blank screen instead of loading and freeze on that blank black screen until I force-quit the game. So first I did something that I think may have been really, really stupid of me. I went to my Override directory, found the four or so .ARE files that were named AR9000-something, I think - I may be getting the numbers wrong now, but I know I had the right ones then - that corresponded to the indoor areas of Suldanessellar. (I checked using the IESDP's area number listing.) And I moved those files into another folder separate from my BG2 install. I also deleted the files that were in the cache and temp folders, just in case, even though that hadn't helped the other three times I'd tried doing that.
I couldn't load my save where the party was IN Suldanessellar, then. Even after putting the files back in my Override, the save in the main Suldanessellar area would crash.
So then I did something probably just as stupid, although I couldn't have known at the time. I backed up my savegames folder and my portraits folder, saved a copy of Weidu.log somewhere else so I'd know exactly what mods to reinstall in that exact order, and uninstalled the game and deleted my SoA folder.
I was going to just reinstall as I normally do, only now I can't seem to do that, either.
Part-way through the first CD while trying to run a full install I get this message:
I'm not sure if I'd get that with recommended install or minimum install yet, either. I do know that if I hit Ignore a bit later I get another one of those messages, for a different file.
I would try to install as recommended or minimum, but I want to be able to continue my old savegame, and I'm not sure if that's doable if I don't do the same type of install I did last time.
Any ideas, suggestions, or help would be really appreciated...
