No, I talk to the peddler and say I would like to take a look at his items. I never get to see the items because its as though I clicked the done button.
Just a thought for you for a later date. Perhaps adding a variable effect to the screw up. Instead of the item being ruined something else happens that is unexpected like what happens w/ wild mages.
