Edit: Got it to work using the steps below (changes / additions to the above)

Step 0.
have lots of free space on same drive as BG2 (see step 7 below)
run BP-BGT File Checker03b\Checker041b.exe, get all green before continuing

Step 3.
put TSv501.zip in BG2 folder
put TSv503.zip in BG2 folder
put BP-BGTv311.zip in BG2 folder (instead of *FULL.rar)

Step 6.
Extract TSv501.zip 'here' to make TSv50.exe
Extract TSv503.zip 'here' to make TSv503.exe
Extract BP-BGTv311.zip 'here' to make BP-BGTv311.exe

Step 7.
Run Fixed-BP-BGT-NEJ-310-COMPLETE.exe (instead of BP-BGT-NeJv310.exe)

Step 10
At this point I needed 2900 megabytes STILL free (before stage 1, the extraction).
Following the instructions from then on worked.
