We still used bags in our play through. The client player must simply open all bags/cases before anyone talks to merchant NPCs or the occasional NPC with multiple dialogue options. It's a hassle but easily still playable with cases, if the client player opens the a bag again after anything is put into it and then closes a crash will never occur.
I'm unable to post my saved game at the moment as I am the client player so no saves on my computer.

Ok. For this issue I've narrowed it down to a purple potion case in one of the characters inventory. It seems that if the non host player hasnt opened the case since anything was last put in it, the game will crash upon talking to any merchants. 95% sure thats it. Its either that or the fact that I put on an unidentified belt which turned my character into a woman that glitches out a little and ill have to wear the belt the whole game, lol.

The widescreen mod is set to 1900x1200 for both computers but one monitor is larger than that at 21 inches.
Both computers are able to use these merchants in single player, even when using the same multiplayer save.
Yea, it is megamod, I mistakenly put BGT thinking it was the megamod and not just an individual mod.
I got this megamod package from here
