In Topic: moving BWP install to another computer

06 November 2009 - 04:47 PM

Sorry if this is hijacking the thread, but I'm in a bit of a pickle, it would seem.

I'm currently on Erasmus in Spain, and as I didn't have a laptop at the time of leaving (it was still in production), I copied the Black Isle folder onto my external hdd, which I took with me. However, when trying to run bgmain.exe, I first get a "-1" error popup, and then an "assertion failed in ChDimm.cpp at line number 834."

Any help?

My girlfriend has access to the computer on which I installed the original, so I hope she'll be willing to help if necessary ^^

Edit: nevermind, it seems that changing the drive letters in baldur.ini was enough :) However, making this post not completely worthless: the stutter I experienced on my old pc (5 years and counting) seems to be present on this brand new dell studio xps as well... Oro?

Yeah, imagine my surprise! I suppose the computer was thinking the same thing and tended to immediately shut down upon Venkt's sight.

Well yeah, an expert install as in I simply chose that in order to modify my components (as was my understanding). You'll see that in that last install, for example, NeJ is the only expert component :)

I assume that:
- spell revisions is to blame for Venkt (skipping)
- item revisions is to blame for my general game crashes (going to edit the .bat to include only component "3" - penalty to casting speed for arcane caster wearing armour)

Will keep y'all posted, and thanks again for the help!

Good news everyone!

My most basic install yet has been quite successful indeed! Played through Candlekeep without one crash or assertion error, even CLUA'd to Venkt (see above), game doesn't crash there any more either.

So! Do I have to roll back to the backup and then go through the entire .bat process again for adding separate components? I would assume so, correct?

Quick Question, are you using old saves or starting a fresh game?

Do you want a guess? You might try dumping all items before resting. The only big mod that I haven't used is Item_Rev.

Each time starting a fresh game (don't know why, but every time I spend about fifteen minutes in the stat screen; could just edit it with NI later on... guess I'm a bit of a purist).

Almost at the generalized biffing of my latest attempt at a crash-free install, will try dumping all items before resting as soon as I can.

Thanks for the suggestion in any case ;)

Right... Same thing, although I can use resting in inns and outside at first. Don't know what the trigger is for it malfunctioning from a given point.

Also, and I don't assume this was the case in my previous installs, turning dead causes major stutter.

Dropping my inventory was of no avail.

Edit: Thanks Lol, my bad ;)

Edit 2: Perhaps worth mentioning that the debug included is of yet another new install; conclusion: no more crash on sleep, random crashes are back (and so far one assertion failed at line 250).
I defragged my harddisk earlier this week, just so you know.

Edit 3: I'm going for another install. Minimum plus the quest mods. If that's stable, I'll reinstall again, adding one component a time.
