Megamod/BWP freeze/crash on character creation

19 December 2011 - 06:21 PM

Hello, all. I don't believe I've ever posted before, but I've been lurking for some time. Every year or so I get an itch to replay the Baldur's Gate saga, and for the past couple of years I've been using the BiG World Project to mod my installation. The last time I did this was almost exactly one year ago, with version 9.6. That installation was long since cleared out for space, so I started from scratch this time around, on Windows 7 with administrator privileges and UAC disabled.

I redownloaded all of my desired mods, and the newest versions of the BiG World install and fix packs. I began working with the GOG versions of both Baldur's Gate games, but when that didn't work, I also tried with my old disc version of Baldur's Gate 2 (though I've long since lost my disc copy of the first game). The installation went pretty well: I ended up deselecting some mods that I couldn't get working, and had to consult this forum for guidance in a number of trouble spots (I had to disable the "GOTO :TP1CHECK" line in the install batch file because it was having trouble with the GOG version of BG1), but I eventually got through the install process without incident. I fired up the game. However, I could never get through the character creation screen: it would inevitably crash either during or immediately after the process.

The baldur.err file showed these two errors:

---------------------Start Logging Session---------------------

ASSERTION FAILED!
File: CTiledObject.cpp
Line: 179

Exp: FALSE

Msg: Tiled object resref not found
Run Debugger?

---------------------Start Logging Session---------------------

File: InfGame.cpp

Exp: nExportCharacter > 0

I figured it was some sort install failure or mod conflict, so I tried again. I reinstalled BG2 and tried again. Same result. So then I reinstalled a third time and started paring down on the number of mods. I tried that two or three times, eventually trying the barest minimum possible: BGT and its associated fixpack. Same problem. The game works fine vanilla, but the mods break it, every time.

I found another thread by someone who had a very similar problem. But the recommended fixes didn't appear to work: my cache, temp, and tempsave folders were fully emptied, my antivirus was off, and I redownloaded everything just to make sure nothing had been corrupted in the download. No luck.

I'm sure I've missed something obvious, but I'll be darned if I can see what. I spent most of the day installing and reinstalling and I've gotten basically no where, so I figured it was time to consult with the experts. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? Any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks!
