Isn't he underpowered?
Not really. He was never meant to be a high power character, and all three kits include a few tricks that will keep him alive until he reaches a high enough level to be really useful. If you take him as soon as you leave the first dungeon, he should be on a par with most of the Bioware NPCs by chapter 3, maybe earlier.
Why three kits?
SConrad had a very good idea for a comedy kit, and I had an idea for a more serious type of druid. The Totemic druid is not found among the Bioware NPCs, and is very powerful even at first level, at least early in SOA. We included all three to give players a choice.
