Ok, thanks. But why only 2 levels of thief? Is thieving *that* useless in IWD2It's an easy enough game, and Gamefaq's Ultimate Power Party faq will give you plenty of ideas. The basic Two fighters, one cleric, one level 2 thief / level X mage, one sorcerer, and one more character of any class will do fine.

It's the way skill points work in 3rd edition. A level 2 Thief / level X Wizard can keep the most important thieving skills at a level just a point lower or so compared to a pure thief through the whole game, more than enough to find traps and pick locks. Pick Pocket is worthless anyway in IWD2 unless you constantly reload, and stealth can be replaced with invisibility no problem.Ok, thanks. But why only 2 levels of thief? For one party that had no trouble finishing IWD2 with no reloads, and a partial walkthru, look here. The party above is more directly powerful (and the UPP is far tougher), but this party may give you some ideas on tactics.

Aasimar Paladin
Drow Sorceror
Aasimar Bard
Strongheart Ranger/Rogue
Gold Dwarf Cleric/ fighter
Gnomish Wizard
Right, the main advantage to the Aasimar is one simple thing. Every 4 levels you get 1 ability point. Aasimar get 4 extra ones (Cha+Wis) right off the bat, but lose 1 level. Not a bad deal considering how much those 4 points can mean.
The Aasimar might say they like being Paladin's, but as they have a bonus to Charisma, they really love being Bards. A bard is nice because of the songs it sings, and the fact that later on, you can use them to stun enemies and heal your party.
The Drow sorceror is because I already have two Aasimar in the bard and the Paladin. Drow suffer dayblindness, which matters a lot less when you are a spellcaster anyway.
Strongheart halflings are the best because they get a extra feat. I find the halfling a surprisingly good ranger, thanks to its high dex and hide skill. Just min-max away your Cha to more constructive uses. Call it a halfling Ninja and say it doesn't talk much or something.
The gold dwarf is good because you don't need dex, but Cha for a cleric helps against the undead with turn undead. High con and the ability to wear armour makes it pretty hard to kill as well.
The gnome is there for variety. Nothing really good to say about gnomes. Don't get a deep Gnome, it sucks.

As for the party I've usually played:
- fighter, ranger, or paladin
- battleguard of Tempus
- morninglord of Lathander
- rogue/ranger for archery
- two sorcerers - I find it pointless to have a mage in the party
At different times, I changed the rogue/ranger to bard/ranger (or pure bard). I'll have to try with a bard, I guess.
Typical tactics - I guess you can guess them already - fighter and battleguard at the front, sometimes aided by the morninglord - but usually be aiding spells if a battle is tough, with the archer behind protecting the magi, usually give him a point or two in some melee proficiency - usually faster to dispose of those that break through the lines, and definitely safer. Of course, the sorcerers are self-explanatory.
A bard is sometimes useful, but I couldn't help but wonder if they are not wasting a character slot, doing nothing but singing. Despite the great effects, the bard was usually not put to great use. They can get to be good spellcasters, though, as they get some incredible spells at high levels - I won't spoil the fun for you :-)

Mordrayne Sage, Human Diviner
Gillan Twin Blades, Human Fighter
Dentreg Shadowcloak, Strongheart Halfling Rogue
Sir Kharas Ironheart, Human Morninglord of Lathander
Thorin Death's Bane, Shield Dwarf Fighter
Purely for the roleplaying value. Single classed through the game. It does make a difference btw, if you use 5 instead of 6 characters.

Drow fighter/sorcerer (ten leves as fighter)
Aamisar Fighter/Paladin (four levels as a fighter)
Human barbairian/priest of Tempus (ten of Barbarian)
Aamisar priest of Lathander (they get some really nasty domain spells)
Tiefling theif/monk (ten of theif so get those bonus feats)
moon elf mage (of any school)
have the Drow as the diplomat (sorcerers are the best for that and offensive. trust me)
have the first aamisar as your in combat healer
have your human as the master buffed tank (plus the tracking skill comes useful)
have second aamisar as your healer/buffer/blaster (REALLY nasty domain spells hehehe and they have an ability like lay on hands of the pal)
Tiefling can do most theif skills and compliments of the monk levels can fight like buggery
have moon elf as mage buffer and blaster
used this party and almost cried in pity for the monsters
In the wake of destruction progress is made
I am who I am, and none shall change me
