Sorry for this porably quite simple questing, but I have recently had a custom portrait completed by the good people at Sol Ek Sa, and am trying to put it into the game. I'm attempting to put it in with just my own [CHARNAME] for testing, screenshots, looking at the contrast with the HUD etc., but am having trouble. I have no idea how to put a new portrait it, i.e what folder does it go in, what format should it be, what resolution should it be in etc. Can anyone help me here? If anyone's interested, the thread is here

It's the one at the bottom, the big one that has the green <not blackish> colored necklase around his neck.

Cheers,

El

ok, i dont know how much you know, so im going to try to make this a noddys guide - if i miss anything you need, tell me

1) you need 2 portraits, both saved as .bmp files

one must be 110 x 170 pixcels - must be saved with L on the end eg. ElfL.bmp this will be your large picture

the other must be 38 x 60 pixcels - must be saved with s on the end eg. elfs.bmp , this will be your small picture

2) now you need to go to your baldur's gate directory - this can usually be found by going to c drive , program files, black isle, bgii - soa

now copy both of the portraits into the file labelled portraits

your portraits should now be accessible to the game

to use - if you r starting a new game, choose "custom" when you choose your portrait, choose L.bmp for the large picture - it will show you how it will look beside it

then choose S.bmp for the smaller one

If you r half way thru a game , open your chars stats, which shows the big picture, your stats etc, go to customize, and change the portrait as above

i may have missed out a step there - if you r still lost, let me know :)

now copy both of the portraits into the file labelled portraits

And if there is no folder labelled 'portraits', don't panic. You can simply create one (buy choosing New -> Folder). I seem to recall that not all IE games have the custom portraits folder by default. ;)

Ihmeellinen meri

Kummalliset kalat liukuvat syvyydessä,
tuntemattomat kukat loistavat rannalla;
olen nähnyt punaista ja keltaista ja kaikki toiset värit -
mutta ihana meri on vaarallista nähdä,
se herättää tulevien seikkailujen janon:
mitä on tapahtunut sadussa, on tapahtuva minullekin.

bgii has - it was one of the selling points of the game when they released it, that you could change portraits and sounds etc

You don't need the large portrait - rather, the medium one. I can't remember the size for it offhand though. The naming conventions (*L , *M, and *S) do NOT matter - they are simply a conventional way of grouping portraits that are the same person, just different sizes. The only pattern it needs to match is *.bmp - and it might not even need that. It simply needs to be the right size (if it isn't, the only harm is that it will look very strange) and be saved as an uncompressed bitmap.

The size is 110x170 like Zethre said. :)

From the readme in your baldur's gate directory that was installed with the game:

Custom Portraits:

The measurements for player portraits are 38X60 pixels for
the smaller portraits (8-bit color runs faster but it can be
up to 24 bit color), and 110X170 pixels for the larger
portraits.  To use a custom portrait, place it in the
Portraits directory (in the install  directory for the game)
and add an S to the end of the small portrait name and an L
to the end of the  large portrait - otherwise the two names
must be identical.  The names must be 1-7 letters long,
maximum - so the filename with the S or L added to the end
is no longer than 8 total characters.  The portrait files
must be in BMP format.

For example:
XXXXXXXS.bmp for small (38x60, 8-bit)
XXXXXXXL.bmp for large (110x170, 24-bit)

For multiplayer, each player must have a copy of the
portraits, otherwise they will see a blank icon instead of
the other player's custom portraits.  You will need to
manually send these portraits to your friends as BG2 has
no method of transferring them.

the .s and .l do matter if you use shadow keeper, tho not for your pc portrait i agree. but if you're going to play with portraits you might as well name them properly in case you get involved with shadow keeper later

You don't even need the L, M or S at the end...

The name has to be short, that's the only rule I can figure.

Sooo:
m_elfwizM.bmp
m_elfwiz1.bmp
elfwizL.bmp .... should all work

f_elven_figher_coolS.bmp wont' work (at least it didn't by me untill I re-named it..It might allso be the fact it uses more than one _ )
