Of all
IE games
IWD2 was most fun in the character creation and levelling aspect. The more flexible class system and feats etc. gave possibility make more detailed characters. The only problem is that when you play
IWD1 again or
BG1 without tutu they seem awfully limited. So I suppose that for CRPG with
IE engine 3rd,
but 2nd ed. for P&P, though I must admit that I have very limited experience on both, since we mostly played with ICE's Rolemaster.
EDIT: Oh... Wait! With 1st ed. you mean good old Dungeons and Dragons? That used to bee so much simple, no-fuss with the complicated rulesets
fun. How could I forget?

Ihmeellinen meri
Kummalliset kalat liukuvat syvyydessä,
tuntemattomat kukat loistavat rannalla;
olen nähnyt punaista ja keltaista ja kaikki toiset värit -
mutta ihana meri on vaarallista nähdä,
se herättää tulevien seikkailujen janon:
mitä on tapahtunut sadussa, on tapahtuva minullekin.
