So folks, which one is your preference? The other thread wasn't set up as a poll and didn't include first edition, either. So I started this poll. :)

3rd Ed.

But GURPS is still far better in almost every way. :D

3.5ed is much more "correct" and also logical then the older editions. But there is a game called ADOM which has some very nice advantages that I would like to see in later versions, like wielding any item you like as a weapon (from anvils to your dead dog) and using any item as your ranged weapon (from breast plats to an egg). The only disadvantage, in ADOM is, well, the game itself.

Thus it was that Rincewind, hurrying through the crowded, flare-lit evening bazaars of Morpork with the Luggage trundling behind him, jostled a tall dark figure, turned to deliver a few suitable curses, and beheld Death.
It had to be Death. No-one else went around with empty eye sockets and, of course, the scythe over one shoulder was another clue.

I have a special attraction towards SPECIAL myself. But if I were to choose, I think I would choose 2nd Edition, although I like 3rd Ed. too, it`s just to be considered as a totally different game.

2nd.

it's a GAME. If you want realism and logic, play LARP. Or just write a book.

I'm parti to the many options presented by 3E. Not to mention the gradual improvement of attribute points.

So realism and logic are bad things?

IIRC, the Munchkin D20 game did this as well :P Fighters are proficient with "everything that ever has and ever will be used as a weapon" (from memory, subject to massive faults) and for the IE games that would beically be to allow al items to be vielded in hand and deal 1D2 dmg or similar. Now that you mentioned it, im looking really forward to backstabb Sarevok with Melicamp the Chicken...

"So realism and logic are bad things?" -kish

In a game i usually ansver yes. however i see no more or less logic in 2E than 3E.

overall i would have to sat 3e b/c the level up system is so much better, but i like the way minor things in 2e(like some spells) work better. I'd also like to be able to use both a kit to start and be able to gain prestige classes, or is that just insane.

I actually like the system in an rpg called ad astra better, but its not dnd and dosn't have a game based on it.

3.5 All the way. ;) I hated 2e with all its 1001 individual tables to look up utterly every aspect of everything. I dislike the racial caps on advancement in 2e and the racial restrictions on classes. I think 3e did a huge favor by nerfing quite a few things to make them more equitable and also still allow for great diversity and advancement.

2nd Edition
I could go into why, but that might be better suited in a different thread.

but I will say this, for all of it's so called flaws, it a game, know the rules of the game and you can play the game, make it up as you go along and you're playing another game.

that said go find a copy of the 2nd ed DMG and READ the intro. there is a nice line in there that shows that most of the complaints about so called "restrictions" of the game are BS.

if you are a rules lawyer type player (and I think most of the complaints come from such players)
then, No system will ever keep you happy.
but if you are out for the fun of the game and to have rules to play by without having to stuff around, AD&D 2nd Ed gave that.

and remains in my opinion the best structured or free flow system there is
(free flow? some of you will wonder?, go read the Intro (by Skip Williams if I recall) and then re Read it until you understand)

(Credentials, I have been playing since 1988, I own and have played, DnD, DnD Expert Rules, AD&D, AD&D 2nd Edition, AD&D 2E Dark Sun, DnD3E, DnD 3.5, G.U.R.P.S, Mech Warrior, Paladium, and more........ )

Bioware 2E. Where a standard monk! could have more hit points than PNP Sunnis or other Good Elemental Princes... which is why any mode trying to make them close to PNP will make them weak...

I have to admit that many of the people i know that favor 3E or 3.5E are the ones liking to powerplay. it is easier in many ways than in 2E yes, but i still would never return to 2E's incrediblly strict classes and almost complete lack of customisation of characters.

Feats often anoy me cose they shift the balance more than anything in the game.
