The symbol of Torment tattooed onto the Nameless One is the symbol of a flag seen in the Blood War battle that rages during the ending cinematic.

I think that's TNO's journal. At the very least it's definitely a book and not a flag;

Thanks for pointing that out. Oddly enough, I never noticed that before.

Whoa...  You mean you didn't maximize your intellectual stats (INT, WIS, CHA) during your first run through the game?  Surprising.

No. The first time I played through the game I played as an intelligent warrior who had an undying love for two-handed hammers (no wonder I love those paladins in Warcraft 3). Mastering a weapon early and boosting your constitition makes the early parts of the game a breeze. Of course, I once played through the game as an intelligent, wise mage as well who persuaded Trias to seek forgiveness.

I still haven't played through the game as a thief, but the thief class seems underpowered to me when compared to the other two classes (which is ironic considering I love thieves in Baldur's Gate 2).

(Probably in one of his many lives... For instance, telling TNO that he didn't know him caused him to think Morte was his skull, and led him to be ran over by a cart... etc)

One theory was that TNO was igby.

To Platter - Do you know anything that suggests what the orginal incarnation's crime was?

Nope.

Platter, welcome to FW. :)

Thanks, though this is like my third time registering here...

Do you mean "Bigby?"

That sounds pretty far-fetched considering, you know, there are no Bigby's Hand spells in PST and I'm pretty sure Bigby is associated more with the Forgotten Realms than the Planes. Then again, I know almost nothing.

Though any further disscusion on who TNO was is pointless as Platter has posted info from the developers that TNO never had a name.

Bigby (along with Mordenkainen, Vecna, Tenser and a couple of others mentioned in BG2) is actually a Greyhawk character.

Actually Bigby is from Greyhawk, the original gameword for D&D, and basically the world D&D was originally based on, so many of the great wizards there have made spells that came into the players handbook. Bigby is one example others are Mordenkainen, Tenser, Rary, Otto and so on. But yeah you only get to see them in the Forgotten Realms games :) and since greyhawk is very little known nowadays. Temple of elemental Evil is actually in Greyhawk world.

Argh, you beat me to it Nightmare, so ill just put some more info so my post isnt totally useless.

EDIT: Larloch removed by popular request, that would also explain why i havent seen that spell in any PHB's.

Actually, Larloch is a FR character... He's a Netherese lich who lives with a horde of undead in the countryside somewhere. :)

Yes, I meant Bigby, sorry. There is a dialog string that lists all of TNO's names like in his journals, except that the name Yemeth was replaced by Hero and Bigby.

Find your servered arm in the tomb in the catacombs take it to Fell to identitfy the tattoos then question Dak'kon about the 4 symbols. Ask him about the archer.

Do any of you put any store in the novelization of Planescape Torment by Ray and Valerie Vallese? It does not give a name to the first incarnation, but does give him a history, with reasons for why he has a contract. Has this been discounted before now, or does anyone use it, because it admittedly isn't the game.

I'd discount anything you read in that. It's tosh.

"Aside from the obvious surface connections, the novel had little to do with the game. I think it was written well before the game came out; the authors were working from rough outline/brainstorming notes that were probably rehashed more than a couple times before being used to write game dialogs and stories. If memory serves me, the book was wrapped up just as I was coming onto the project... which means the hefty chunk of game dialog I wrote hadn't been done yet, and Colin hadn't written Everyone's Favorite Fiend."

Morte says that he isn't sure but he THINKS that it was you (nameless one) and I think that the blood war theroies have some merit because you keep having flash backs which means that you have at least fought in them, and also whenever you ask about the blood war you feel (fear?) I'm not sure if that would be the correct term, but you certainly had to have been someone of great importance and power in your first incarnation, because when you learn and use the bronze sphere and learn your 'first life' you gain 30 levels
one favor I must ask 'Adhan' I've heard many things about what happens when you go back to the smoldering corpse bar if you've been using that name, but I've never expereinced it, what actually happens because
1) I don't want to play through the whole game just for one thing and
2) My copy of torment is in bad shape and doesn't always work (thanks to my brother) and I have never managed to find another copy of it
I apparently have a high level of empathy, combined with a low level of sympathy... weird
