Is it possible to edit or make a new world map, and therefore be able to use more of the cities, mines and other landmarks that are in Amn?

Hell ya'. Many mods do this already, not including the TCs. ;)

Well, can you point me in the right direction.
I was thinking of trying to add some new towns, and other quest areas... presuming I can make the maps or can find someone else with the skill to do them.

Is there a technique that allows changes to be made to the map in save files, the way ToB does when it adds Watcher's Keep?

I think this is the real issue--a way to update the worldmap on-the-fly and having it update an end-user's savegame file. I'd love to help Wes add this kind of functionality to WeiDU, but I'm afraid it's a bit out of my grasp.

You can edit the WMP with some serious byte editing, but it's really more trouble than it's worth. This was my first plan for the world map fixes until I just gave up. Adding areas ala WK is an interesting idea. It's controlled by a coupla 2da files but IIRC they only get one travel link. May also be more trouble than it's worth.

I did all my WMP editing with NI. However, I was just changing map parameters and adding/changing travel links. I don't think you can use it to add areas.

Why is this Hypnotoad video so popu... ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

Not sure about savegames (I haven't tested) but watcher's keep is added via the xNewArea.2da and the xl3000.2da. I and others have added to it successfully. However, I can't for the life of me remember the effect on a savegame...

Ah, thanks, hlid. Now the question is--how to add new icons without completely overwriting mapicons.bam...

There was some talk about that on the Weidu board, but I don't recall it being something that was easily done. I suppose you could make multiple mapicons.bam files by taking mapicons files from mods that edit the World Map and adding your info in there. Then you'd have to detect if any of those mods are installed (an exists_in_game check should work). It may be more trouble than it's worth.

One thing that could be done would be to make a general "world map mod", which would be updated any time the makers of an almost-finished mod wanted to add a new location. If a mod which the world map mod covers isn't installed, clicking on the icon for it would simply take you to some kind of dummy area.
