So, does he even have the slightest chance of redeeming himself, or is there something attractive about calculated, evil men? Maybe becoming good or neutral would change him into someone who no longer possesses whatever made him so charming in the first place. His personality would be lost in the transition (so to speak). :D

There is a possible alignment change available for Edwin, if the player so chooses, yes. And I think he still retains his charm afterwards. :D

As for what Dorotea said about how she sees Edwin's personality, that is how I see him as well.

Just wanted to add a comment to clarify my position on 'other romances'. (After receiving a rather emotional private message)

What works for person of certain age, background, mindset, etc - does not necessarily works for another. Being a rather cynical adult female of heterosexual persuasion with technical background and a 'masculine' job I am hardly a good example of what general romance audience will be, and as such my opinion on these romances should not matter to anybody writing one.

Freedom cannot be equated with goodness, virtue, or perfection. Freedom has its own unique self-contained nature; freedom is freedom ? not universal goodness. Any confusion or deliberate equalization of freedom with goodness and excellence is in itself negation of freedom, and acceptance of the path of restraint and enforcement.

I am only going into this long-winded rant mode because I saw your other posts and I dont consider you a 'troll' - I think you are honestly curious and just wanted a good discussion - right? Please prove that it is so, by accepting that diversity of mods and opinions in this forum is something to be proud about, not to regret.

While I may critique mods that twist the original personality of a character into someone else's vision of that self-same character, especially if they are no longer true to who they were originally, I'm not one to object to a diverse range of ideas. I won't hesitate to criticize an egregious interpretation of an NPC, however (like Weimer's Solaufein or Lord Mirrabo's Imoen). I'm entitled to those opinions and if anyone in particular hates me for them, that's their problem.

Of course, I couldn't help but be curious when it came to this particular mod, which seems like what I'd describe as a good expansion of Edwin's default personality. It takes a good understanding of a character to build upon what we know about them without losing their essence in the process. I'm glad you've done a good job with Edwin here. :D

*grin* Thank you, I have tried my best to expand Edwin's personality and not to replace it, and I hope you will find my efforts to your liking when the mod is eventually finished. :) And even if you did not, I wouldn't hate you for it, we can't expect to please everybody.

You know Laufey, it always annoyed me that the best mage in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 was evil. His nature was the price players had to pay for his "peerless skills".

I think the movie Spaceballs put it best when Dark Helmet said "You know, evil will always triumph because good is dumb"

So, does he even have the slightest chance of redeeming himself, or is there something attractive about calculated, evil men?

I've always found intellectual, witty ( and, yes, smug) men to be enticing. Because, as someone stated earlier, egomaniacs don't NEED someone to constantly hold their hands and reassure them. That's what I found so annoying with Kelsey and Anomen. Not only were they complete saps spouting the same tired lovey-dovey drivel, but they constantly whined about their oh-so-tragic lives and would insist upon the PC to coddle them and make their life decisions for them. I love Edwin because he has a spine, he's interesting and goddamn funny at the same time.   Yup, he's the simulated man for me!

As for being "redeemed", he never struck me as a complete and utter bastard . It's not like he drowns puppies or anything. Because puppy drowning happens to be quite a turn-off.

Couldn't agree more. :) Eddie's the simulated man for me too, all the way, and no, I don't think he's an Evil Puppydrowning monster. ;) Certainly my version of him isn't.

In short, what in the world do you see in him?

Accent! Accent! Accent!

Edwin is like a big, viciously-fanged teddybear. He seems scary and kind of unappealing at first, but once you get used to him, he's really quite endearing. And the accent is to die for.

I'd gladly be his cuddle-monkey...
