I am happy to announce that Southern Edge is now the first mod in Athkatlan Grounds mod series. 

 

Southern Edge is a new district for our favorite BG2 city - Athkatla - available from the very start, once you talk to Gaelan and hear his offer. The mod is to make the first hours of the game more interesting, as some player might have got bored with doing the same quests over and over again. The area isn't as big as Slums or as Bridge District, but it includes a main quest introduced by a halfling name Mairo and a series of mini-quests and encounters introduced by both some new characters, and some you might have met before.


There are also some nice bits every district should have - a small shop, a tavern, some commoners, a temple, some troubled men and women... what else do adventurers need, right?


It's not a big mod, but it should entertain you for a moment or two. I hope that the Southern Edge will become a nice stop for you, Bhaalspawn, and your trusted group.

Is it compatible with EET as well?

(Maybe there is an issue with chapter numbering for things becoming available at later parts of BG2?)

EET compatibility was added in the new version, so yes. It should work just fine.

Great - I will try it, I am still in BG1 part of EET so I can easily add it to my current playthrough (probably just need to add the map manually to my worldmap.).

Sadly, savegames can't be updated on EE. Only on vanilla BG.

PS - Did a quick visit in my EET setup and checked it randomly. It all seems to work fine (Dialogues, inns, area travel, items). Since I am still in BG1 in my playthrough I look ahead to pay it a *real* visit later on.

Great! Note that the mod isn't super big, it's not as big as Slums or... Goverment district, but it's no as small and empty as City Gates. Anyway, I hope you'll like it.

Hi. Can I play this in BGT (not EE)? I used BWS to install a fair number of mods. I am currently in Ch 4 (Bandit camp). Do I need to start a new game for the worldmap to show Southern Edge correctly? Do I just unzip to "D:\Misc\Games\Black Isle\BGII - SoA" and run the Setup-SouthernEdge file? Thank-you very much!

Sorry, but it works only on EE. If something works on both, I usually upload it to Misc. Released Mods section. In Southern Edge I'm using new animation and opcodes that do not exist in vanilla BG.

Those who enjoyed the Eilistraee's Song mod (this includes me) will like this mod. And those who like this here mod and never came across the other one, should install it soon.

Like all your mods it does not even attempt to be sensational but highly original with a lot of love to detail.

I especially like the references to the protagonist's earlier adventures (no spoiler here).

 

And the size is just the right mixture - there is enough to explore and revisit but you do not get carried far out of the game for extended periods.

The idea to have it *just around the corner* , no excessive travelling needed, is brilliant,

 

I am sure this will soon become a standard addition to Athkatla.

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it! And speaking of Eilistraee's Song... I guess it screams for an update... Will need to take a look on what I have.

The mod just got updated. After many request, I made it compatible with old BG2. It was harder than I thought it would be, so I'm not planning on making my other EE-only mods work on old BG2. But here you are - Souther Edge for both platforms! :) List of all changes:

 

-Vanilla BG2 compatiblity, with many alternative files to match old BG2's engine limitations and resources
-New component: custom area icon
-New content: Ribald's delivery mini-quest (starts at Adventurer's Mart)
-New content: "Buried Love" mini-quest (starts in the Graveyard's tomb)
-New content: Unique commoners
-Restored tasloi animation for vanilla BG2
-Amaretto talk fix (link to wrong response)
-Some small fixes and tweaks of SE items
-Slightly modified Chapter 6 shop
-Slightly more difficult final battle
-Merchant escort variable quest fix
-Addej journal entries compatibility for EE
-Additional proofreading (by Artemius_I)
-Travel time fix (by badungu)
-Savegame patching (by K4thos)
-Traification (by GeN1e)

Yeah, I think that's a leftover from polishing the mod or proofreading. It will be fixed when I'll be releasing some other version.

That quest should be available only after Trademeet quest, if that's what you ask :)

Not sure what you mean by corrected. There are like 4-5 typos I know about and that's all. Everything else is working just fine. Next version will be uploaded if something more is reported and/or once someone translates SE to some languague. Nothing like that happened lately. Fixing typos is on my to-do list, but I would rather release minor corrections along with something else.

What? I don't understand. What for weekend? No new version is comming soon. Not this weekend, as no significant bugs were detected. What would cause a sudden update? If someone sent me some new translation OR some game-breaking bug, but I doubt there is one in the current build, as someone would have probably reported it already. Current version has been up for a while.
