I just discovered this mod that maxes the party size at 10: http://gibberlings3....showtopic=27138

Would it be possible to add this to an existing BWP installation? Or incorporate it into the BWP somehow?

That's GemRB. That is a open source clone of the infinity engine. It is cool conceptually , but is nowhere close to being in a state where it can replace the infinity engine. Gemrb is the final frontier for BG2 modding, but it will be very difficult to achieve without a lot more active dev support and fresh blood

You all should know that the GemRB is not exactly ready to handle the 400+ mod components that constitute the megamoding. The vanilla game works to what the testers have been running with it... but that's just the tip of the iceberg when we are talking about megamoded game. And the 10 party members is not actually a fully fledged feature of the GemRB yet, as said, it's not tested at length, as the BG1 game hasn't been tested a single time with it(this can be assumed from the answer I was given to this).

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.
