I've often thought about having a mod that would essentially replace Jaheira with Khalid.   Instead of finding Jaheira in the cell next to Minsc, Khalid would be there, and it would be Jaheira's body you find in Chateau Irenicus (although most people I know use DBG).  Most of the work would probably involve re-writing/tweaking the dialogue.

 

The BG2 Khalid could potentially develop from a stuttering, somewhat emotionally crippled individual to a much stronger and self-assured version of himself (as opposed to the way he was portrayed in BG1... unable to make up his mind without Jaheria's influence) with PC's help.  A romance would also be interesting. 

 

It wouldn't be too far-fetched for Khalid to be the target of the Baron Ployer quest, and the Harper plots, etc.  Again, a lot of tweaking/re-writing of dialogue but... why not?

 

Anyone else interested?

There's a fanfic by Flarn that explores this and I think Smiling Imp wanted to bring Khalid to Bg1 SoA(it's just Dynaheir now). Personally, I'm not sure: Khalid's death is such an integral part of BG2 now. I love seeing him and Jaheira together in BG1, though, so if there was a mod which brought Khalid TOGETHER with Jaheira to BG2, I think I'd be interested.

Lava: The Khalid Mod you linked to is for living Jaheira.

 

I myself was never very interested in Khalid as a joinable NPC in BG1, but the switch between him and Jaheira in BGII would be doable, yes (he could also be attacked by the Harpers because of something that happened while Jaheira was still around).

 

But yes, since I really don't like Jaheira and think it is a pity that she is assumed to be one of the standard BG1 NPCs, forcing player in BGII to have a bad feeling if kicking her out of the party (sorry, Jaheira, but I cannot remember travelling further than Nashkel together), having not her but Khalid would be a welcome change.

I never really liked Jaheira.  Not in BG1, and certainly not in BG2.  It always felt like I was adventuring with...my mother, or my spinster aunt.  She's so preachy and snarky.  Khalid, on the other hand, seemed like such a gentle soul with enough kindness to share with everyone.  I got the impression that Khalid was once a brave and fierce fighter (why would Jaheira be with him otherwise?), but something terrible happened that stripped him of his self-confidence.  That always made me sad, and a part of me always wanted to reach out to him and make everything okay.  But his wyvern of a wife was always in the way.  And even though I know she loved him, she also bullied him a little bit, in my perception. 

 

I'm actually trying to learn how to use all the old modding tools now, because I think I'd like to take a stab at making this into a mod.  

 

BTW, Kulyok... I absolutely adore your mods, so your opinion is very important to me.  If this actually turns into a real project for me, I would love to get your feedback.

Best of luck to you! And feel free to steal any of my code, if you need it. Tech-wise, I think it's best to use your modding prefix for Khalid's files instead of just Khalid.cre and Khalid.dlg - other mod might insert some random trader/merc named Khalid, or even BG2EE might add something(though I wouldn't know).

 

@Lava: I remember the mod, but I was under the impression it was still in alpha stage(because it didn't get hosting, just a thread) and dialogue needed some serious editing/proofreading/adding some commas here and there. If it's final, it'd be great for it to have a site and a forum, so a good NPC doesn't get lost, but that's just me.

I thought I was the only one who felt bad about Khalid. In BG1 I always felt terrible booting him from my party, like shooing away a timid stray dog that's taken to you. I would definitely love to utilize him rather than Jahiera, if only so I won't have to feel chagrined any time Jahiera disapproves of something I've said or done.

Khalid is a sweetie who engages in a dangerous occupation which terrifies him, because it's the right thing to do.

Jaheira is an insecure termagant.

 

Which would I like in my party again?

 

(Ah, that's my personal opinion of Jaheira.  I know that other people have different interpretations of her character, which are equally valid, and if they like having her in the party then more power to them.)

I had to look up termagant but yes, that puts it nicely. In my opinion.

I'm a little late to the party, and I'm not sure if this idea is in development, but I would absolutely play this if it were to happen. I always felt indifferent to the character back in vanilla BG, and it wasn't until Tutu and the BG 1 NPC Project came out that I really gained a deeper appreciation for him.

 

I think this could be potentially be a great way to further explore one of the more interesting characters in the game. Explore his past and why he acts the way he does, and yes, maybe even develop a romance with him later on. I'd always thought the Jaheira Romance rushed things to the point of distastefulness and would like to see something like that done with more subtlety...

 

Anyway, sorry to ramble, but more content is always a good thing, yes?

To be fair, Jaheira's romance is the longest of the original set, and they didn't have Throne of Bhaal to help slow things down.
