Greetings.

I have been playing my Mega Modification for a long time now which contains 100eds of different components. Everything's been running (mostly) fine up until now, alas, I'm beginning to suspect that my harddrive is on it's last legs.

Can I safely copy my game folder and saved games onto an external drive while I swap out my old drive for a new one? Should I uninstall and reinstall (usually the best approach with unmodded games) the Mega Modification or just copy everything? I'm asking since it seems modded BG responds quite badly to alterations of the load order... ;)

Thanks, NN

Greetings.
Well, the only thing you wish to is to copy the entire game folder to the other USB drive... where ever. If you haven't been stypid and have followed the FAQ, all the save games are already in the game folders "Save" -folder what it comes to the newer OS'es, (you might want to go take a look just in case), the FAQ also guides on how to retrieve the saves that are not there.
As you can start the game from the drive or from anywhere else as long as you edit the baldur.ini to account the drive change and you need the BGMain.exe to start the game, as you also always need to start the game from the BGMain.exe(or the ToBEx starter), not the baldur.exe (as that starts the original front-end program which starts the game from the Windows registry, and if you copy the game, it's not installed nor registered in the computers registry, meaning that the game front-end actually gives you the option to to install the game, as your only option).

Yeah, read that again, there's several lines of though... but the main is: YES, copy the entire game folder... sorry I ramble. Ouh, by the way this is all in the in the pinned topic(the FAQ) it the megamod help forum, where this question should be... rambling, again sorry.

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

If you're a rambler, it's probably best not to advise in discussions like this.

Yes, you can copy your game folder to another location.

Do NOT uninstall anything.

The simplest method is:

- Copy (backup) your game folder to...somewhere.

- Install/format/prep/etc your new drive.

- Install BG1 & 2 onto the new drive. Use the same drive letters and folder names that you had on your old drive.

- Copy your game folder onto the new drive, into the same location as was on your old drive.

- Play as usual

If you're a rambler

Ever heard of self ironic but still informative narrative... yep, that was a rhetorical question.
Ouh, why do you Azazello hate me so ? Yep, this one is even more dramatic and even more rhetorical question, as it's intention is to actually ask why did you ask the question in the question mark-link, and not the hatered, cause you can't but love us all Imps, we are too cute and we all know this and abuse it on daily bases.

You could even make an archive of the entire installation before copying it to another drive, if it will archive.
