Still if i only want to use the new portraits and stand-alones instead of replacing the default portraits how would i go about it?

Which game do you play ? BG2, or the BG1EE or BG2EE ?
In BG2, you can just copy the portrait you wish to use into the portrait folder in the game folder, you should name the different sized pictures to be different than they are in the mod archive, so you know what they are and don't overwrite the old ones, then you go into the game and push the "custom" button when you can choose the portrait in the character creation, it's under the portrait.
In the Enhanced Edition games, the portrait folder is in the user profile files, or you could just dump everything into the game_install_folder/Movies/ -folder as that's the folder which overwrites everything.

I'm running Trilogy (big world setup). I tried extracting the .bmp's individually in the portraits folder and when i tried to customize my main char's pic with say the custom Ajantis pic it showed the DEFAULT pic instead of the new one for some reason.

Sorry to inform you, but there's 2 trilogies... BGT-WeiDU, and EET... but let's assume it's the former.

Now then, when you need move the .bmp files to the game-install-folder/Portrait/ folder, you do this by first extracting the PaintBG v2.0.zip\PaintBG\Ajantis folders content(it's within the downloaded archive, ha ha) with WinRAR to a folder of your choice, and then go into the place you extracted the files to then name the files as aaaaaL.bmp, aaaaaM.bmp, and aaaaaS.bmp, and of course then move them to the game-install-folder/Portrait/ folder, or game-install-folder/Override/ folder. Then you start the game, make a NEW character and then you pick the aaaaaM and aaaaaS pictures via the custom picture choice window. If you wish to use the pictures on an already made character, you need to either edit the save game with a ShadowKeeper or use the export import functionality to start a new game but that of course will lead to starting a new game as well.

If I pick the component to replace Isra, do both Isra and Isra BG2 get replaced then?

I believe the same filename is used, so I think yes.

Reviving this thread for two reasons:

1) I like these portraits and use them all the time in my games, so thanks very much to artastrophe for creating and sharing her art

2) I want more portraits in this style, both additional options for joinable NPCs and also new portraits to replace non-joinable NPC portraits added by other mods

I will contribute $400 to commission artastrophe to create additional NPC portraits for us to enjoy. I hope some others will help to fund this too.

Other players that like this art style, please help me compile a list of desired portraits. To start:

- Alternate Imoen (examples of styles I like from other artists: http://fc00.devianta...cal-d5nznk0.jpg and http://s1087.photobu...rent=1PinkL.jpg)

- Alternate Gavin (I prefer the default portrait from the Gavin mod, one of the few cases where I don't use a PaintBG portrait)

- Other joinable NPC portraits: Keto, Nephele, Sandrah, Tashia, DSotSC, ...?

- Non-joinable NPC portraits: everything covered by NSC Portraits and Aurora, at least ...

I have some newer commissions I can add to the next portrait pack as well as a pile of old portraits I need to finish hehe and then the new BG EE characters I have done... so we are kind of on the way to the next update! xD

Remember that I was among those who politely asked you to make PaintBG not pre-selected in BWS. Portraits are a matter of taste and for many people they are part of the NPC personality - the brownish Imoen and the long haired Minsc that talk about their red hair or bald head respectively are oddities not everybody likes, Stay away from Sandrah - it is a mod still under development and I am already fighting hard to prevent all types of tweaks to the mod that unbalance or disrupt it. Go kidnap someone else.

 

I hope to see replies from others on this forum suggesting which NPCs (joinable or non-joinable, from original game or from mods) are most in need of new portraits.

I remember thinking these were great when they were first released.  I haven't started a real run since then to actually try them out, though.

In my opinion, the most important consideration before using a portrait pack with a unique art style like this is whether it will be compatible with whatever else I am using. I wouldn't want to play a game where half the characters are in a different art style. Thankfully, this pack has portraits for all of the original NPCs, major non-joinable characters, a number of mod NPCs, and some more for the player character to choose from.

 

Other players that like this art style, please help me compile a list of desired portraits. To start:

If we're discussing what we'd like to see in the future, my main request would be more of the major mod NPCs. There are some really great and popular ones missing, like Kelsey, Keto, and Finch from PPG.

Personally, I'm picky about drow portraits and I would appreciate seeing updated versions of the ones in PaintBG. It's hard to get them just right, but my preference is for black skin (that's neither too red, too brown, too blue, or too black) and silvery/white hair. The closest portrait in PaintBG to this style is Xulaye's.  I did some sloppy tweaking to demonstrate what I'm trying to describe here.  The originals are displayed before the ones I Photoshopped.

Regarding non-joinable NPCs, there are few that you speak to more than once or twice. While it would be nice to have portraits for some of the important characters you run into, I think that's a lot less important than having matching portraits for NPCs.

OK Roxanne.  Unless I hear otherwise from you, I will leave Sandrah alone as you asked.  Please note that I respect your opinion and I did remove PaintBG from the default selection in BWS as you asked.  What I am offering here is to pay for a PaintBG-style portrait for Sandrah for those who do like this portrait style.  As it is your NPC we are talking about, you could have as much creative input as you'd like (include veto if you don't like the result).  My goal is, as Mike put it, to have PaintBG style portraits for more of the major mod NPCs.  I view Sandrah as a major mod NPC, which I hope will be popular and which I certainly plan to use in my own games.

It seems Artastrophe is back in bussiness and ready to create new portraits for Baldur's Gate. What do you think, which one should be done next? I personally vote for SoD plot-NPCs"

I'm the writer of Sirene NPC and I'm not sure how often this thread gets any attention, but I'm happy for artastrophe or anyone else for that matter to create alternative portraits if they're willing.

@agb1: Good to know. While I don't want to hog what remaining commissions you have I thought I'd add that I have another few mods that I'm aiming to finish and release: Drake, Pai'Na, Gleya. While they're not ready yet I'm determined to finish Drake and Pai'Na at least - Gleya I'm not so sure about at the moment, so if you're willing to take requests for the former two that'd be awesome.

Etamin listed 6 needed portraits already for SoD - I suggested Wilson could be skipped for now, which would leave one free for Sirene.  I would certainly like to see arta-style portraits for the others, but I think I've run out of commissions.

Gorion's BG1 portrait, unlike Tamoko's doesn't work ( not shown ) on easy TUTU.
