Today the power failed for a few seconds 3 times, and when I came down from my bedroom my PC had frozen. Later I tried to open my current IWD game, and couldn't.
I got this error message:

An assertion failed in ChDimm.cpp at line number 600

Programmer says: Unable to open BIF:data/GUIfont.bif

Each time I tried to uninstall or reinstall any of the mods actually installed I got the same message, no matter whether I used the Set-Up file in the IWD root directory , or used the setup/exe file from another directory.

FATAL ERROR: Failure <"Unable to find DIALOG.tlk">

The game had been runing absolutely fine before the power cuts/outages, and it was turned off overnight.

Mods in order of installation: G3 IWD Fixpack; Item Upgrade; Unfinished Business; IWD NPC; G£ IWD Tweaks; Widescreen Mod.
I can post the full Weidu if that could help.

Many thanks for reading this :new_thumbs:

Save the Weidu.log and the \saves folder somewhere else, nuke the installation and then use the saved Weidu log to re-install everything as before. Copy back the \saves folder and carry on. Guifont.bif and dialog.tlk are obviously shot, but you don't know what else might be damaged too.

This is why the chkdsk is good, if you look it up at the google, you'll find out that it's a check disk command line usable in the command prompt... and that's what our guest intended.

Chkdsk is.... shall we be nice and say... somewhat unreliable, but in light of what happened then yes, it might be a good idea to run it as well.

I ran Chkdsk (well hubby did cos he's a PC fixer/helper/builder and wouldn't just show me where it is in W7 - he had to run it himself!) Anyway it found nothing in either of my two current IE games. Re-installing an adding old saved games has always been a disastrous failure for me, but I didn't know about WeiDU then. I read Yovaneth's advice (many, many, many thanks) thought a bit and did the following, figuring that erring on the side of safety was best.

I’m adding this next line for the benefit of search

REINSTALLING WHILE KEEPING SAVED GAMES INTACT

1/. Saved a copy of my current WeiDU

2/. Saved a copy of my PCs character files (both CHR and RES)

3/. Saved the portraits.

4/. Took a note of all my curent config settings

5/. Took a copy of my changes to the IWD Configuration txt file

6/. Uninstalled using Control Panel, and manually emptied the folder completety

7/ Reinstalled painstakingly following the order in the WeiDU with one exception - I reset the config before installing Widescreen Mod (you need to set it to window mode for the mod to work, so I always do this as my second to last action)

8/. Installed the WideScreen mod

9/. Copied my saved version of the mpsave folder into the IWD directory

10/. Copied my saved PC character files into the characters folder

11/. Copied the portrait into portraits

12/. Prayed to the gods of the aether, the spirits of gaming and anyone else who might be listening

13/. Pressed PLAY, loaded my games and hey presto ... it worked!

WOOOHOOO!

Especially since I decided to run two games at once - so if one hit a bug, I could play the other .... but BOTH were screwed :o As I've said elsewhere, I'm like one of those bright tubes in the back of greasy spoon restaurants ... a bug magnet!
