So... what exactly is the problem, and what exactly is the fix?

We have not the answer of the 1st question... so it's difficult to have the one of the second one.

I'm kinda late to the party, but:

 

I've had the exact same problem and it's most definitely directly caused by changing his class to Sorcerer. I SKd my Xan to Enchanter to check it and Moonblade was useable by the same exact Xan that couldn't touch it before. No other changes.

Please export and attach the file called KIT.IDS (it should be in your override... otherwise, you'll need NearInfinity to export it from one of your BIFs )

What Lollorian said, or you could actually change the usability flags in the item itself... -with NearInfinity or the DLTCEP.

I don't actually need this to work, I googled it out of curiosity and looking through this thread I saw that nobody was sure what caused it in the end so I chipped in

That... didn't do much good The thing I thought could've been the problem looks perfect in your KIT.IDS so that's obviously not the cause
(yes I thought dem mods screwing with MAGE entries was the problem )
