Stuck in the cage in BG2 beginning...

Just tested starting BG2 with a very recent BWS install, and I ran into something I have never seen before.

I pick a mage, and when I level up, I do not get to choose any higher level spells - instead, when I return to the game and the cutscene with Irenicus is about to begin, a bird spawns in front of the cage and starts a dialogue and "says":

"you now need to select known mage spells"

And there is one answer "NO VALID LINKS OR REPLIES" and on the continue button there is the "you need to.." line repeated. Both options closes the dialogue window but nothing more happens. I'm stuck in the cage and the bird does not go away.

What is this, and more importantly, can I fix this?

This thing again... has to do with MAGESCHOOL_GENERALIST entry in KIT.IDS if I recall... fubar'd by some mods. Can you do change-log of kit.ids please?

What it is : BGT feature to choose known spells since you can only choose spells for level 1 character at character creation.

Hah I reported that back in February : http://www.shsforums...ction-dialogue/. The culprit found there isn't even in your log... so a change-log would be very nice.

Thanks for posting that link, and yeah I wonder what the culprit can be here. As you said, it's not ding0's tweaks.. and I am very wary about what kits I install (or things modifying kits). In fact the only thing I can think of that I installed this time around that I haven't installed before, that has to do with kits, is Wizard Slayer Rebalancing. Maybe it has something to do with it?

Also, Beleg33, in that other thread you said you fixed it locally - I admit I did not fully understand what you did. Care to explain? :) I hope I can fix this without much fuss to be honest :)

Sidenote: I'm thinking I am a little senile here, because I have played at least 4 BWP runs in the past and I have *never* seen this bird in my life - for the life of me, I can only remember actually picking several levels of spells in the actual spell selecting window. Am I going crazy here?

That's been implemented somwhere around v1.13 of BGT IIRC, kinda recent feature. Only appears with mage classes AFAIK but not bards (and I don't think that's really planned, might be worth asking again though)

What I did was update the response trigger Kit() check to match the KIT.IDS entry of a generalist mage.

Sidenote answer : I don't remember any such thing unless you start the BG2 part with a sorcerer.

I see. Well, it has been a long time since I played this game at all. Must have been a sorcerer i'm thinking about :)

I do understand what you mean, but I do not debug this game very often, so could you just shortly explain how to do this?

Open up the A6GENSPL.DLG file in Near Infinity, go to the edit tab and change the response trigger 1 to match your kit.ids (Should be either MAGESCHOOL_GENERALIST or TRUECLASS depending on how your ids file has been modified)

Alright thanks so much for your help.

I can't get this working though. Here is some info:

The reply trigger 1 is Kit(LastTalkedToBy(Myself),MAGESCHOOL_GENERALIST)

...which probably is fine but it's weird that reply trigger 2 and onwards has a bunch of other things in the string too. example reply trigger 2:
Kit(LastTalkedToBy(Myself),MAGESCHOOL_ILLUSIONIST)
Global("A6GenSpl2Blur","LOCALS",0)
But maybe that's how it should be?

Anyway, I tried changing MAGESCHOOL_GENERALIST to TRUECLASS. Didn't work.

I looked into the KIT.IDS to see what it should be, but funnily I have them both in there. It looks like this:

As you can see, both are listed at 0x4000. I removed (just for test) the TRUECLASS entry and made the A6GenSPL.dlg thingy match mageschool_generalist again, but it didn't work either.

I wonder what is going on here. Any thoughts? And can I provide something else that could be of value?

Hmm, also these are assigned the same number, is that really correct?

0x0000 BARBARIAN
0x0000 WILDMAGE

It looks odd if you ask me, but then, I wouldn't really know :)

Well, that's how they are added in the original SoA game during the ToB's install...
A few mods among others made the Barbarian a Fighter kit, so there was no confusion of the above, as the Wild mage and Barbarian are actually true classes originally.

Well this is happening to me too and I can't fix it like last time. The only way I could make it work was by replacing that trigger with True() but if you want to start another game with a specialist mage you'll have to False() it. I'll report to BGT forums about this issue because I can't figure it out.

Anyway isn't the point of BGT to start a game in BG1 and then continue with your character already powered up? :P

Yeah, but not by breaking the game, which it would do as it doesn't allow you to select more than the first 2 spells at level 1.

Try changing that response to

OR(2)
Kit(LastTalkedToBy(),MAGESCHOOL_GENERALIST)
Kit(LastTalkedToBy(),TRUECLASS)

Don't use the actual numbers as per KIT.IDS.

I tried that already Ascension64, sorry I should have mentionned it. My kit.ids is similar to Casper's.

For the record I even tried with having both Kit() true (without OR(2))

I don't know what else is borking this up. I don't have any issues if I put the attached KIT.IDS into my game and create a mage.

Can one of you create a problem character, export it before levelling up, and then attach it here?

Okay with the response trigger being
OR(2)
Kit(LastTalkedToBy(Myself),TRUECLASS)

I only get th NVROL when picking a single class mage, all multi-classed mages have no problem.

I think I'm seeing the issue with the .chr file... The kit is set to magetw which is created by some mod, to do something (?)

It would be Refinements (for real this time) duplicating kits to differentiate HLA tables

Likely it isn't in the scope of BGT to add such a check.

Worst case we can add the check through patching refinements' tp2 with BWFixpack.

Nice work Beleg :) I can confirm that changing response trigger 1 into " Kit(LastTalkedToBy(Myself),magetw)" allows the game to proceed.

What will be the side effects of this, I wonder?

or you will get the same issue with multi (perhaps dual too) mages
