By the way...Has anyone tried out the MP in this new edition?  Is it the same as the old edition or different?  Was thinking of picking it up now rather then later...mainly because a friend of mine was interested...but only if the MP was any good or actually works well...

MP still has some major problems so I'd wait a bit.

Greetings,

I have just read this view on BGEE and I am wondering... Is it really this bad? :ermm:

My fantasy story

"Man, in his discussions with other men about questions of religion, statecraft, geography, trade, has always reached a point in the discussion where it has seemed wise to reply to his opponent by disemboweling him or knocking his brains out."

My name is Thomas Hockenberry, Ph.D., and I think the "Ph.D." stands for "Pouring His Draft."

That is the steam version... they are not current with the patches.  Blame Atari I guess.

As for if the game is bad,  I don't think so... but I am biased.   Have said above that I think its the new gold standard for the version of the engine regardless of whatever bugs or problems remain in the game currently.  Will say this,  for modding... this is the version I want to use.  The functions in the engine now actually work.  ie: NinthNearestEnemyOf - actually gets you the ninth nearest.  Just an example.

If its play you want,  the patches are still coming and its getting better every day.

Everything there is true, steam version or not.  The few BGEE-exclusive engine fixes won't matter for 99.99% of the players, and PC modders unattached to Beamdog don't care, either.  I'm still waiting on a reason to get it as there's tons of engine stuff that could greatly expand the mechanics possibilities.

If PC modders unattached to Beamdog don't care, then they are not well informed what kind of a transformation the engine has gone through.  You make some grand generalizations there based on your own opinions with an unfounded percentage claim.   That's fine, but you are spreading ignorant rhetoric that has no basis in first-hand knowledge.

I think Cuv's(and your team's, naturally!) work on BG2:Redux is much more of a challenge and a change, though. BG:EE does some good things - offers a quick save without a loading screen, adds a "total stats" field, a new all-voiced NPC or three. But on the whole, I understand phordicus's point of view and I believe it should be heard together with the others - people spend money, after all. For me, EasyTutu+Widescreen mod provide more "space" for the game on my screen, and EasyTutu in general remains a better option for my private games, since BG:EE adds no new voicing/new textures/new banters(new NPCs like the monk guy have very little content, from what I've seen in my tests). And lots of (unnecessary?) work for modders and for Weidu maintainers - and who knows how much work will be added to this when BG2:EE comes out?

It's a good thing it attracts new players. It's a good thing we have a choice. I believe, though, that an Enhanced Edition would be really Enhanced if it meant something like full voicing, great new original textures and a modern engine(Frostbite or whatever have they).

Well, maybe in twenty years? :)

Just a minor point - BG:EE offers improved textures in just about every area. The original bitmaps are now .pvr files rather than .tis: this means textures that are crisper than the originals and don't fall over when you zoom in. The beta testers put a huge amount of pressure on Overhaul to improve the graphics and Overhaul did deliver - so well that most players don't even realise it was done.

I regret to say that a lot more of the graphics improvements were not included in the release version because of space and time constraints, but we are still hoping to get those remanents released as a patch.

That's amazing news, I didn't know that. Please, keep up the great work(it sounds so banal! But all true!).

Well yes textures are a bit crisper than the original but bluriness comes to play when you zoom in nonetheless.

Could you please be more specific about the graphics improvements which were not included in the release version because imo in the graphics sector the game cannot offer anything more than its present condition?

Unfortunately, no, not yet. If you're looking for e.g. very crisp graphics when zoomed in, then that isn't going to happen. It's common knowledge that the original Bioware resources went AWOL, so everything that's being done has to be done with the little that still remains available.

@luciusdei We proposed Kickstarter, for a #BGEE expansion pack, but our partners were uncomfortable with the concept.

Wonder what the expansion pack would have been about?

Maybe it has something to do with 'Adventure Y', and that Kurgan Sarevok picture that's floating around the decoding twitters thread.

I may not explain details in public, but the expansion in question is the collaborative project by Overhaul and Black Wyrm Lair. Unfortunately, since BWL's founders are not residents of USA, they cannot take advantage of the Kickstarter, and so different methods of funding had to be devised. Improved Anvil sales over at BWL were originally intended to cover all expenses, but as time has shown, it was not selling very well :(

Sorry, I know it's six days late to post this :)

I had no inkling about any expansion pack whatsoever until now, so it's never too late. :)

So, is the expansion pack coming, or is it canceled?  I browsed the forums, but haven't found any official info.

It's definitely coming. :) And is definitely the Adventure Y initially spoken about.
