I don't want to say too much here anymore but just look at those dead dragons. It's seriously some 90s-Poser work. It's so bad.

Well, it IS some 90s-Poser work. It's BG original content, wyvern cave in the Cloakwood.

fxd: Beleg is younger and his reflexes are sharper. Wait. Ah, nevermind ; )

it's quite difficult to complete BG1 and miss that area lol

Well, it is totally possible... just like in Fallout( 1), you can complete the game via killing about 3 characters... it's hard-er perhaps.... but it can be done. The only cave you need to go into is the two mines in BG... and the one in the thieves den that leads to the undercity. There's no need to go to the spider cave or the hunter hut in the same areas as the wyvern cave... it might be beneficial ... for some players.

For the sake of completeness of information, I'll let you know that the GUI shown in the screenshots is far from being final. The devs are working on it day and night, and will likely keep on tweaking it and adding features and functionalities post-ship.

Glad to hear it. I got to admit I'm worried by the fact that it's what - a week(!) until it's supposed to ship. "Normal" titles are feature complete not to mention having gone gold pretty much months before the release date. Hopefully this in turn means Beamdog intends to offer plenty of post-release support.

It was pretty much a given... There was just no chance that they were going to release a game they barely had screenshots for a week before. Incredibly bad form to wait so long though, they must've seen the writing on the wall weeks ago. Either way it's unprofessional :-/

I agree with you; the postponement is a good thing. It's just horribad logistics doing it basically hours before buyers was expecting to preload.

If they didn't know any sooner than now that they needed a 1 month+ extension, it just confirms to me they don't know what the F they're doing. This isn't an issue of etiquette but competence. Deflect away.

I agree that Beamhaul's decision is a bit of a late call, but I think there may have been some approval-related things that may have delayed the announcement (good ol' bureaucracy). Well, I'm at least looking forward to a more polished game than one that is released early and are quite buggy (I can think of a few of those).

Late call, but good way to handle it, as many said. But 4 days before release, delaying by two month the release date on a project of this scope, woah, that's some bad project management, or some really REALLY heavy decision process they've got there...

Maybe they decided at the last minute to revamp something else, and/or not to release during such a charged week game-wise.

Let's hope for the best :D

My suspicions run along the lines of: they probably could have released it, but it wouldn't have been at the level of quality they liked; they had planned to fix and update things through patches and DLC (such as UI improvements etc). Given the feedback, they requested more time, and if they were going to take more time... well, why not do it properly? It gives them the chance to fix all those niggling problems that have to be pushed aside for a normal release schedule, and to create more content. There will be some extra free content for everyone as a result of the delay, I suspect, and that can only be a good thing.

From a developer's perspective, this kind of delay is a godsend. Deadlines are a necessary evil, but evil they can be, as demonstrated by many, many games that get released before they should -- I could name at least a few Obsidian games that suffered from this. Delays are good for the consumer in the long run, even if it means they have to wait. There'll be some form of compensation for it in terms of content, and they are giving out refunds for those who want that.

As for the short timeframe... often a publisher won't take things seriously until things actually get serious. I agree that this was a terrible move from a PR and marketing perspective, and not great as far as short-term brand trust goes -- but I'm sure it will pay off for them in the long run, and I for one am pretty damn glad for it, even if I have to wait longer.

Keep in mind also that this kind of development -- short term, totally digital, with so much feedback and interaction with the online community -- is pretty new. Even these kinds of game updates are pretty new. There are bound to be problems with their model, but they'll iron them out. :)

Unless a company constantly delays and looks like they aren't going to release a game, I will always see game delays as a good thing. It gives them more time to iron out any problems and in the end we end up with a better product because of it. I'm sure I can live without playing BGEE for another couple of months (and if I can't I could always start up the original BG to play in the meantime).

It is rather close to the release date, but I wouldn't be surprised if that had something to do with their approval process.
I scribble and I chirp, wait no. I mean tweet (infrequently). And sometimes I tumble about as well.

That the announcement is way too close to the release date is a fair call - people may have made plans and have a right to feel what they feel. Judging from some of the stuff going on at the BG:EE forums at the moment, people do need to consider the impact of negativity on the devs who do read the posts, whose concern in this small dedicated team is to do the best job they can.

Pretty much everything I had to say on the news has already been said more thoughtfully than I would have put it. Sucks that we have to wait, but the game will better for it, and I trust that Trent told us as soon as he was contractually allowed to. He's been pretty good on the communication front up til now.

Another thought. The new bluish interface seems to blend pretty well with the new bluish content:

Apparently the whole new content seems to have some problems with colouring which is shifted towards blue/violet. What's wrong? Were the artists forced to wear yellow glasses?

I don't have a problem with the color, but the whole thing looks totally disjointed. The pieces don't line up right, and the portraits have that really ugly line around them instead of a nice border. The gold on the left side goes all the way to the bottom, but it's missing on the bottom of the right side. Little things by themselves, but when viewed all at once, it makes for a really unattractive impression.

This is over $1m in less than 2 days and is the same audience as BGEE. If they'd launched on time their sales would've been gutted.

Call me prescient, but somewhere in this thread I said they'd never hit their target if they paid too much attention to the "fans" for these exact reasons, but the kickstarter seems just as likely a reason.
