The Darkest Day was redone to be ToB compatible, after all. And I imagine there'll be people to help with conversion of most popular mods, should the need arise - the scene doesn't consist of mod authors only, there're techs maintaining it as well.

I also agree about "taking the best". There're several mods that beat the original content hands down. Some time ago I did ponder the possibility of an official re-release, enhanced with some of the better works.

Yeah, but it pains me that for example I spent last weeks on writing dialogues for group project called MotSC
It's a BG1 mod - as you can see. I wrote like 1 mb of text, tried to translate some of the content to Enlish etc. MotSC includes a lot of tech components that makes technical parts of BG1 a bit better. It's not just my work, but Zed Nocear spent like 8 years on development of the mod. I'm helping him since... 2008, I think. Now I'm not sure if I see any point in continuing this...

And I know that old games will still work, but they will probably hit the state of stagnation and most people won't use them any longer since they can get newer version.

I suppose I'm better at worrying than Xan, you know.

Trust me, I've spent a good deal of time co-working on Item Revisions, an not at all excited at possibly having to adapt it to new version.
But then again, if they've got any sense, they should simply include IR's content into the release :D

PS

It's a BG1 mod - as you can see.

Not to offend anybody, but how many people play BG1 instead of BGT/Tutu?

Considering how little we know at this moment, I'm going to wait and see what happens. If they're upgrading the graphical end of things, it may have little or no impact on the mods that I make/play.

I myself hate BGT/Tutu :P And I know people who use non-converted BG1.

I wouldn't worry that much if I knew there are people who can help me with updating my mods to make them compatible with the new release of BG... As far as I know, there are people who like Yoshimo Romance very much, but none of them are modders... And simply I don't want my mods to die, yet on the other hand I'm a bit tired with modding. I still really like BG, but...
That's why I don't start big projects. I just finish those I wrote but never released...

I think this is a positive thing. They have mentioned they are keen to support the modding community, and i think with the engine they are using - which is based on the ToB codebase from what i have read - then i dont think they will change too much, other than bugfixes and new content. For all we know their support might also include more info on the game engine to help modders and perhaps mod tools (unlikely i know, but we will have to wait and see) Either way, the fact they are bringing this out is good for all us BG fans, and once they have got the new content down, then they are likely to look towards a BG3 assuming sales are good.

I think this is awesome. Besides, it's not like the good old versions of the game will disappear, right?

Qutoes from Trent Osters twitter account:(Trent is the guy behind the BG:Enhanced project.)

Someone: Will you guys be using D&D 4th edition? Is BGEE going to include the content from BG1+TotSC+BG2+ToB?

Trent:is 2nd Edition D&D. Our first rule is don't break the fun. Part of the appeal of BG was the depth of the rules system

...

Somesone: do u know BG1NPC project ? http://www.gibberlin...g1npc/index.php will there same content in #bgee?

Trent: We've looked into a lot of the mods out there. We're trying to figure it all out. I troll gibberlings3 all the time

...

Someone: Big question. will BGE 1 have kits? I love playing a Swashbuckler starting at level 1.

Trent: We're using the latest code from BGII Thronw of Bhall as our base, so everything in BG II and ToB will be there + what we add

...

Someone: Very much disappointed by the #bgee announcement. I want BG3, not to buy the same games but prettier.

Trent: We want #BG3 as well. #bgee is a part of the master plan.

...

Someone: The current BG modding community is insanely devoted. Will we see this kind of community with #BGEE?

Trent: We're very interested in supporting the modding community and hopefully kicking off even more mods #bgee

...

Someone: What about past mods and compatibility? They are an important part of the reason this game lived so long... #bgee

Trent: We take mods seriously. (I led NWN after all) mods both current and future are important. More announcements to come

...

So, this guy really seems to love BG, which makes me just a bit optimistic, but overall I´m not expecting too much.
I´m not the type to go whining, "They'll ruin it by chaninging it", they can do whatever the hell they want to the game, if it's not a good change I simply won't buy it.

Vague statements and little facts. If they're going to do a surprise wait like they did, it would be nice if there was more facts on their website.

:excl:

This might actually mean something towards that. Me, I'm rooting for another IE game in a similar vein, not another <CHARNAME> story after ToB.

One idea would be, as soon as they set up a forum or something similar, to add input regarding modding; here's the chance to ask for things that modders have always wished weren't hard-coded, to make their lives easier. No telling if they will actually listen, but it's certainly worth a try! :)

Seeing how modding has kept the Baldur's Gate series alive for the past ~15 years, I'm sure they'll at least consider some of the requests.

I wonder now how romances will work in BG1...should be interesting to see who the choices are...Or if they even let you romance in this new remake...Would people even want to romance someone in the first game? Or do you think it's pointless and should just leave that for BG2?

Depends. If BG1.5 does do romances, then I'd imagine it's very possible that more characters will return in BG2, and it strikes me that the BG saga would be a good one to do a more thorough ME-style importing your save from one game to the next.

In the source code of the baldursgate.com page:
<!-- March 15, 2012 -->
<!-- Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine -->

<!-- Chapter One. -->
<!-- There will be more chapters. -->
<!-- More chapters than you think. -->

...

He also states that they'd use less voice overs and have more dialogue, I'm not a fan of the new games where conversation is mostly just one liners.(must admit I haven't played many though.)

I'm rather surprised to see the tepid response from a lot of people here. I would've thought the revival of Baldur's Gate by a dedicated team who are upgrading the engine and seem genuinely devoted to the spirit of the game and its mod community would be a cause for celebration.

Cautionary. Some of us are die hard zealots and we wouldn't like to see one of our favorite games being tinkered around with too much. IMO

I'd defintly like to see both Ascension, both UB mods, and Item/Spell revisions in the remake. Possibly Divine Remix as well, because those kits had a lot of flavor, and are fun.

(I emailed him about those mods - hope he uses them in the future.)

At this point, I'm not really doing much Baldur's Gate related. More focused on Skyrim modding and the Born of Legend tabletop roleplaying game. Don't expect much activity here.

I'm in tears of joy. Hopeful speculation, but there's supposed to be screenshots in a week, so we'll see.
