As for BG3, I don't exactly have high hopes of these guys developing a worthy successor to the series. Overhaul Games has no original releases, so I think the doubt is warranted.
I guess that a new Infinity Engine game or D&D CRPG is better than none at all though.

I'm skeptical about it as well, it's something that even BioWare would have trouble pulling off in their current state. Obsidian would have been a good choice to develop BG3 if someone had to. Personally I feel that the series ended well and should be left alone. I'd more than welcome a non-related IE game though. As for BG3, I don't exactly have high hopes of these guys developing a worthy successor to the series. What Beamdog is doing is a piss poor attempt to cash in modders' work and appeal the younger crowd.

Be all the skeptical that you want, but Baldur's Gate was Bioware second released game. It was distributed just two years after their former title, Shattered Stell.
There's always a first time.
By the way, continually distrust or dismiss newcomers, specially in the work field, is a sad but effective way to potentially ruin talent and enthusiasm, two invaluable virtues.

Perhaps I'm speaking out of turn, but I get the sense that what AMS & Stabwound aren't criticizing BeamDog itself, just the desire to make BG3. Quite a few Baldur's Gate fans, and I count myself among them, do not wish to see the story of the Bhaalspawn continued beyond that last scene with the Solar. The story arc was neatly concluded and wrapped up, we had satisfying epilogues, no loose ends.Be all the skeptical that you want, but Baldur's Gate was Bioware second released game. However, I'd more than welcome BeamDog's talent and enthusiasm if it were applied to creating a new story, a new game, in a new setting, perhaps in another corner of the Forgotten Realms. By all means, let them create, spin tales and capture our imaginations. Just don't call it BG3.

I'm impressed with the 1pp work. I'm currently investigating content inclusion and the legal issues
#Ihatethelegalissues
So 1pp is possibly going to be implemted, but he's wondering about the legal issues.

... hell, if anything Obsidian should be the only company allowed to work on these projects.
I thought they wanted to *fix* the existing bugs in the game...not create new ones.

Why sad? I never said their games were poor regarding story. Perhaps I should clarify - the writers/designers of Obsidian would be a good choice. I find their technical capabilities limited and sloppy when it comes to actually releasing quality games that don't break horribly.

I've found a way to be happy with this.
1. In my mind, the Bhaalspawn saga is done. If they want to risk breaking that conclusion/resolution with me and thousands of other potential customers, that's on their head, not mine. They can't take away any of my pleasure of BG/2, but they might be able to add to it.
2. Modder's rights, etc. I think at the least they'll give credit, if not exposure, to any modder whose work they use; and let's face it, all most modders want (and I include myself) is attribution if their stuff is used and a small thank you now and again. While profiting off someone else's freely released work really isn't a gray area ethically, legally the modders don't stand a chance of affecting this situation one way or the other. The phrase "Lie back and think of Mother England" comes to mind.
3. Selfishness. Regarding BG/BG2, I'm not missing anything (besides some fixes and fully documented source code). All they can give is extras. Who knows what they'll release. New tools, new animation features, etc. I've stupidly focused only on what they might do badly; I should anticipate what they might do well.
