Hi everyone.  A new season, a new computer, and about a million times installing the megamods.

Let's see if I can get this all straight:

After assiduously following the install instructions, I use BWS to do everything up to the point where all the mods are downloaded and extracted.
After that, and the cursory check to get the most updated versions and such of the mods, I cancel out of BWS and use the install program
to do the actual installation work.  According to the instructions, I execute the trimpack and fixpack after the extraction of the mods but before I use the install.bat.

Is this about right?  Like I said, I've done many, many installs before this, and I know what to expect, but I want to make darn sure I know what I'm doing.

Thanks to all in advance

Yes it does start both trimpack and fixpack, and more.
Erhm, you'll also need to make sure that the mods you have in the game directory are the latest updated mods(BWP.pdf file), and not the ones the BWS downloads.

Also you might have to download latest version of WeiDU.exe (23100?) if it isn't included with one of the mods updated recently (if you DL'd one of those). Not sure what's the difference between each version, but the one before (23000) had some bugs apparently.

Not sure what's the difference between each version

Well, the later the version, the less likely it is that the code has bugs, and the more command options the mods can use... as in, each mod has a specific version requirement at least in theory... more info in the pinned FAQ thread, answer #1.

Hmm

So then provided I want to go through and download and extract everything by hand (which is probably just as well), there should in fact be no reason for me to use the BWS at all.  Just get the games installed, patched, get the BG1 missing files, test play it, download and unpack hundreds of mods, and then execute the install.bat.

One more stupid question:  When I extract certain mods (usually gibberlings three and such) in to the main folder, the Weidu console pops up and starts to install, at which point I quickly close it out before any files get moved around.  That's fine, right?  No harm done.

Thanks to all for the swift and informative advice, helping my girlfriend get one step closer to becoming a Baldur's Gate Widow.

Yeah...

As long as no component is actually installed... as the mods give you option to choose language usually first, and then choose what components to install or skip or quit, at where you should select the quit with Q...

Hi ChumofCahnce.

G3 mods are easy to extract. You can open the G3 mod and have it install immediately or you can extract the files into your ...\BGII - SoA\ folder with a zip program. I use 7zip and WinRAR, but I think there are others. Extracting the files with a zip program does not start the auto installation procedure.

There are some mods, Check the Bodies is one, where it is best to extract the files to a dummy folder. Then open the extracted folder until you get to the mod folder and .exe file (sometimes the .tp2 file too). Copy those to your ...\BGII - SoA\ folder.

I assume the reason why mods such as CTB are best in to a dummy folder is due to their inordinate hugeness?

Other than that groovy and groovyer.  Thanks for tolerating kinda dumb questions all, I think I got it now!
