I'm using the prybar but I just can't bash it open. I have only 12 strength but surely the mod wouldn't have prevented someone like me from opening it, right? Am I missing something?

I think you need STR 14 or 15 at least. Anyway that charm is not necessary for the game... There are other ways to get out of there

Oh, silly me. I was under the impression that the bone key/portal was the only method. How shortsighted of me! I didn't notice the downstairs that were next to the upstairs on level 2

There are actually two keys... In order to use the stairs to the ground floor, you need a key (which is not difficult to find, and you probably help). The bone charm can make things a bit easier, by activating one more portal...
