Wow so I spent forever in Durlag's Tower trying to get to Rashad's Talon, a +2 scim, only to be told "cannot equip item." I have NO idea what's causing this. I have 18 str, scim proficiency, and I'm a swashie. I have a scim in my mainhand already, tried switching, unequipping, everything. I'm totally lost. Any ideas??

Are you playing ToTSC, EasyTuTu, or BGT?
Do you have any fixpacks in place that SHOULD be correcting the thief use of scimitars?
Do you have any mods in place that add new scimitars to the game which could be what you are currently able to use?

The fresh out of the box & patched to 5512 install of ToTSC does not allow thieves to use scimitars.
Baldurdash fixed that. The fixpack that i'm slowly working on fixes that in it's current version too.
EasyTutu & BGT use non-override folder resources so it is possible that this particular item was missed in their corrections (if they corrected them)

Till knowing more about your particular install/setup I doubt anyone can be of much help...

Sorry, I thought this site was for people using BGT-weidu. I guess I should've been more thorough, my bad. I'm using BG, its expansion, BG2, and its 2 expansions, all rolled into one game (I assume) by BGT-weidu, with the gibberlings fixpack and tweaks pack installed in the order specified by the readmes and other research. To my knowledge these don't add the Talon to the game, as I've seen independent walkthroughs that talk about it.

Oh, and I got all of this from GOG.com, so I know everything is patched and so forth. It's just weird because I've been using a scimitar all game, then I find this one, and it's red but no other scimitar is red. Confusing.

edit - Just saw this! http://forums.gibber...showtopic=22985 Per your suggestion I'm going to post the contents of my weidu.log in a new reply. Also, I thought I should mention (this seems important) my override folder contains a file called SWH123.ITM which you mentioned is the file for the Talon.

BG2 has the same scimitar available to thieves. BGT SHOULD be using that resource so it should be usable by thieves. But if BGT somehow grabbed the ToTSC variant and did not fix it then the scimitar would not be usable by thieves.

it is also possible that the weapon was modified by one of the BGTTweaks components. This one looks suspicious to me ~SETUP-BGTTWEAK.TP2~ #0 #2204 // Item BG1-ification: Item behaviour changes: 9 (31 Dec 09) it could have reverted the scimitar to the 'broken' state of ToTSC.
    Can you do the following:
  • look in your game directory for the setup-somemod.exe file (where somemod is replaced by the actual mod name such as BG2Tweaks)
  • copy and paste that file so that you will have two copies (one will have a number added to it)
  • rename the 2nd copy to weidu.exe
  • open notepad and copy/paste the following:
    weidu --change-log sw1h23.itm --out change.log
  • save it in your game directory as a batch file. it can have any name so long as you remember what it is. examples you could use: ChangeLogWeidu.bat or CLWeidu.bat or whatever...
  • navigate to your game directory in windows explorer and double click on the newly created batch file
  • it should run and create a file called change.log in your game directory.
  • open up change.log in notepad and copy/paste the contents here. It'll give specific information on what mods and their components that have changed that file.

this information will be useful in determining what could be causing your thief to not be able to use the weapon.

So i had a few moments and decided to take a look at things as best i could without having BGT setup. downloaded BGTTweaks and took a look at their code.... sure enough it reverses the proper usage... So here is your culprit...
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
//Item behaviour changes
<snip>all other coding</snip>
COPY_EXISTING ~SW1H20.ITM~ ~override/SW1H20.ITM~
  READ_BYTE 0x20 flags
  WRITE_BYTE 0x20 (%flags% BOR 0b01001000) //Add Mage-Thief and Thief unusability flags

COPY_EXISTING ~SW1H22.ITM~ ~override/SW1H22.ITM~
  READ_BYTE 0x20 flags
  WRITE_BYTE 0x20 (%flags% BOR 0b01001000) //Add Mage-Thief and Thief unusability flags

COPY_EXISTING ~SW1H23.ITM~ ~override/SW1H23.ITM~
  READ_BYTE 0x20 flags
  WRITE_BYTE 0x20 (%flags% BOR 0b01001000) //Add Mage-Thief and Thief unusability flags
this only modifies the ToTSC weapons so any other scimitar from the BG2 game should still be usable by thieves. which probably explains why you have one scimitar that you can use, i suspect it was added in to the BG1 side of BGT by Exotic Weapons For Taerom component of BGTTweaks.

Recommendation: Slide over to the this thread http://www.shsforums.../261-bgt-weidu/ and request that they NOT remove the ability to equip scimitars from PURE thieves as they are supposed to be able to use them but was overlooked by bioware. supporting documentation is that baldurdash fixes the scimitars for totsc

Oh, so you're saying they could just.. fix it? I'll do that then. All this is really confusing. I did what you said until I got to the part where I was to save the notepad as a batch file and my computer yelled at me and said I didn't have access. >_> I'll go post where you said, though.
