I had a feeling this would be the case. If I could get details on what the problem was to begin with I could have more realistic expectations of what might fix it. This issue is surprisingly hard to google. It should be reasonable to assume that if she managed to get a PC version of the game running on, say, leopard or bootcamp it would work just fine. She's pretty unwilling to do this though as it's a huge amount of trouble on her part. Perhaps I'll look into ways of playing the mac version on the PC? That would require I find a torrent of the mac version though...hmmm...
Windoze doesn't recognize Mac applications, just as Mac OS doesn't recognize .exe applications from the PC/Windows world. So, you won't be able to run the Mac version on a PC. There's not even software available, to my knowledge, to run any Mac OS on a PC (though I know it's been hacked to install on a PC before), but with the proper outlay of cash, Windows can be installed and run on a Mac. The proxy issue you mentioned is simply a matter of how the computer connects to the Internet. All players might be required to connect directly, without proxies or firewalls, but I'm not 100% on that
Surely a multiplayer game should be possible between Mac and PC players. Hamachi might be needed, so that's another thing to research.
Good luck!

So far our plan is for me to install the game, make a BG Trilogy version of it, install any mods we want to have, then I rar the folder up and toss it her way. She installs it via WINE and we follow these instructions on getting multiplayer to work. If those instructions fail we'll try a wireless LAN with hamachi, but I've heard that the hamachi method makes things much more difficult than they need to be.
If NWN can be played multiplayer with WINE then surely to goodness we can get BGs 1 & 2 to work.
