Can't Start a New game

Hello, people of BWS! I've just re-installed BGT (my old installation had some corrupted files, like Aerie.DLG and via BWP setup and lots of mods; nearly every single mod installed perfectly and I followed the pdf. file with utmost accuracy. But then: I launch BG through 'baldur' it works marvelously but I try to click a 'New game' (In BG1, BG2 and ToB doesn't matter) it CTDs. I mean it tries to load *something* maybe a quarter or something and then crashes. The ERR. and ToBex files are empty:


Oh, boy I spent two days installing these mods.

I tried to launch it through the BGMain, but it still pertinently crashes.

Oh and I dunno why GUI didn't want to install (the version that BWP sent me) but the old one (from my older installation) worked better.

And why BWP BGT weighs 13-14 GBs?

The BGT itself takes 2.5 GB's, just to get the info from one directory to another, the TDD, SoS and TS all are big mods and they are biffed into your game's data folder, this doubles the space requirement, among other things to make the game actually playable... as the .bif files are faster to read for the computer than the normal .bam files, .tis files and sound files. And every time a game files is modified, the weidu.exe that installs the mod, actually copies the file to a backup folder so it can uninstall the mod, and remember the mods just copy most of their files to the "override" without removing their own. This all triples the data amount.

You need to be using the BWS beta and then you don't have to care about a .pdf files...and you can customize your install towards your hearth content.

Oh. That explains a lot. But what about the crash? I've done some testing (thought that GUI was responsible) and I've installed Big Picture GUI, but it still crashes. I tried to copy-paste BGMain from ToB disk, but then a error comes when I try to launch it - yeah, I know, know; BGT-Music.

EDIT: Okay, okay... I tried to paste a new BGMain and then re-installing BGT music... Character creation worked, but it crashed when it was loading Candelkeep.

EDIT2: Hmm... Uninstalling generalized biffing seems to trigger the intro BG1 movie, but it still CTDs at the loading screen. Nothing in ERR file.

Do you get a Windows error? Go into Start > Settings > Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, Application, then scroll down and see if you see an Error for bgmain.exe (or tobex or baldur.exe) and paste the Description of the error if so.

Edit: I know it's a pain to do another BWP install, but you may want to try again and replicate this recent successful install.

Nope, nothing in there. But it seems to be a 'BGMain application error' or something, not a Windows one (I've an old WindowsXP)

Edit: Oh well, thank God, BWP setup did a backup copy of vanilla BG2.

Edit2: Oh, Jesus Christ... This is getting weirder by the minute... (i.e. this game hates me so much...)
I just did I clean install of BG2+ToB, thank you God, I chose to play a little... and vanilla game refused to start!

I try to insert my backup chitin - the same.
I try to insert BWP chitin file - the same.
I try to launch the game through Bgmain - it starts. But in the main menu there are ambient sounds playing - birds singing and casting sounds together with menu music. I had a 'wtf?' face. And they continued some time after quiting the game.

Edit3: Sorry, but why the hell NEJ doesn't recognize official ToB patch?

I've never heard of an error like that - only thing similar is this and I doubt you're on Linux. Could be a messed-up filepath though. Might want to try a clean install (make sure your disks aren't scratched or anything either) to a simple path like C:\Games\BG2 - also uninstall any previous installs first because (from the sound of it) your machine's registry might be hosed with respect to BG2's location or something.

If that doesn't work, and you are on windows 7 or windows vista, do this: http://www.shsforums...45

You need to disable UAC or else it will partly install baldur's gate in /My Documents/AppData (hidden directory)

Yet *another* clean install, with yet *another* BWS install. I'm getting tired. It still crashes (WHY?) at the character creation screen, but now an odd error jumps out.

PS: And why some mods force me to install ToBEx? I find it extremely unnecessary and useless. When I had Tobex the game wouldn't even start (somewhat similar error, but not the same) I deleted it (for the third freaking time), the game started and see above... I'm beginning to think, that someone really hates me.

I suppose it's a windows error or something, 'cause I've got some more games and this error jumps out occasionally there.

There seems to be a typo in that mod's tp2 installer. I'm not familiar with it, but you might try leaving it out.

PROBLEM SOLVED (sort of)

The error causing things were: TobEx and this

But now I was forced to install a hybrid of BGT music, cause full one gave me an installation error - is there some way to change it manually with NI?
