I'm not really sure how caster level works out in the case of dual-classes, multi-clasess and for rangers/paladins (and again dual/multis involving them).

For a dual class - is it the level of the relevant class always? Say, you have a cleric level 1, dualled to fighter level x; will the spells cast always be as though he is level 1, or will the second class come into it somehow? I would think they are always cast at level 1, but then...well, see the last point of this post (ranger/cleric) which causes me to think twice.

Same query for multiclasses - just the particular class concerned that counts, or some sort of average perhaps? (In particular, Aerie, being mage/cleric; are the caster levels separate or combined in any way?)

For Paladins/Rangers, they start casting at 9 and 8 respectively right? (or is it 9 and 7? I see conflicting information on this) Is the caster level then just what their current level is, or is it as though they are a level 1 caster from that point onwards? (i.e. Level 19 paladin casts spells as though he is just 19-9=10, or 19?)

Again, how does this work out with dual-classing/multi-classing rangers/paladins.

I do know that there is a strange option in that even a ranger level 1 dualled to cleric will get ALL druid spells too as levels up and opens up the relevant spellbook pages - so these, I would guess, are cast at the cleric's level? Or does it take some average of the levels? In this case, I would think it would certainly not cast the druid spells at just level 1...this is why I said earlier I was unsure on the cleric 1/figter x dual, but then this combo is probably the odd one out rather than the cleric/fighter etc ones.

Very interested in having this cleared up hopefully.

News flash, you cannot dual a 1 level character... but if you have a 2nd level cleric dualed to fighter, he'll always be just a 2nd level caster, not the X.
I don't know how the Ranger/Cleric thing works, but the rest are easy, the caster level is the one level the spell falls on, so mage/bard/sorcerer spells are determined by that class, for clerics and druids the divine spells have the same, the only exception is rangers and paladins, there is a table that determines the "caster level", if I remember it correctly, rangers caster and spell levels start at level 7, where the caster level is 1, it increases every level until it's 9 at level 16 from where it doesn't increase any more.
For Paladins it's almost the same, but I don't think the spell levels start at level 7...

Thanks for the clarification on what you did know.

So, the ranger/cleric (both dual and multi) still remains a mystery, anyone else who might hazard an educated guess?
