So I've been trying to set up PS:T for the last couple of days. After downloading from GOG and applying all the recommended mods, I fired it up but it runs very slowly/laggy. I've tried many solutions offered on-line but it still runs laggy. My laptop is fine hardware-wise so I really don't know what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas or any other solutions I could try? Any help would be appreciated!

Erhm, where did you install the game to ? If it's in any of the operation systems default protected folders, there's a chance that none or some of the ways said here actually change a thing... so make sure that's not what you are doing... so install the game to the C:/games/PST/ -folder or the like... not to C:/Programs Files/ sub-folder. And follow this guide..

Yep, Jarno Mikkola. my Mega Mod FAQ. Use of the BWS, and how to use it(scroll down that post a bit).
OK, desert dweller, welcome to the sanity, you are free to search for the limit, it's out there, we drew it in the sand. Ouh, actually it was still snow then.. but anyways.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. Unfortunately, this hasn't helped. It was actually a little worse, as on top of the lag there was a cursor trail. This was resolved with one of the ddraw fixes though. I think I'll just re-install without the graphical mods and just do the bug fixes and tweaks and see if it runs smoothly like that; not too fussed about super-sharp graphics over smooth game play.

Just an update, it still ran laggy without the graphical mods so I'm stumped again. To confirm, I have followed the instructions in your post. Does anyone have any ideas that might help?

Thanks.

First, I want to thank this mod community, You guys are doing an awesome job,

If for some reason the wined3d dlls don't work for you...
try my http://bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html with the NoVideoMemory option enabled.

It's the only dll that so far is working for my Windows 8 64-bit config, all the others that i' ve tried hang during startup.

I'm looking forward to the mouse trails flickering fix on Win8, but at least the game now is very fast and the spells effects look great.

FOR WINDOWS 8 USERS:

My Case: Installed Planescape Torment + 5 Recommended Mods.

My Problem: Had extremely slow frame rate for cursor; unplayable.

Failed Solutions: Copying 3 .dll files, running setup for ddraw fix, etc. (only caused other problems)

My Solution:

1. Downloaded ddwrapper.zip from http://bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html

2. Extracted (using 7zip) into Torment Game folder (same place as the .exe)

3. Edited the aqrit.cfg so that:

ForceDirectDrawEmulation  = 1

NoVideoMemory                  = 1

and saved the file. Ran perfectly (after hours of researching/troubleshooting). Hope this helps fellow windows 8 users (with the mods)!

(If that does not work, others reported success with editing the .tp2 file from the earlier download: http://www.gog.com/f...ng_in_windows_8)

Signed up to second this fix and thank you for posting it; going through older fixes I had either good fps OR no cursor trails.

Your fix works perfectly on my Windows 8 Intel Laptop with a GOG copy of PS:T and the same 5 recommended mods. I'm only in the first screen of the game, so I'll post an update if something buggy happens further on (I've heard spells can be a problem sometimes).

Thanks to everyone who has put in work making this game playable.

Low hung brow, dazed look on your face..... It appears that you are correct, my friend. You are indeed a complete imbecile.

surely ddraw fix is a nice addition, i wonder when Ghostdog will make a new version of his mod with ddraw fix embedded on it with the other fixes that exist somewhere i guess, this if he is still active.

Suppose I have DDraw Fix installed, but my system doesn't need it. In this case, does the mod do anything? I haven't experienced any unwanted issues that could be related to it, but the idea of having a mod installed that I don't need kinda bothers me.

If the game runs good without the mod then the mod isn't doing anything for you :P

The mod forces DirectDraw to use its software renderer instead of its hardware accelerated renderer

( ddraw's software render out performs the hardware accelerated render, for most people now-a-days )

Theoretically the only difference is speed.

but if it bothers you then uninstall it...

Good deal. In my case, the mod comes with the GOG d/l for BG2, which is otherwise a pristine installation when extracted. I just figure the less the game has to read, the better. My system is a starship-level powerhouse, so it can handle virtually anything out there :)

*Note: pst-drawfix has been reported to introduce minor flashes/glitches when casting spells
the best alternative to my patch IMO...
open wined3d.exe inside of 7zip
and extract libwine.dll, wined3d.dll, and ddraw.dll from $SYSDIR into your torment folder
( adds a few seconds to the game's startup time, but worth it.

the mouse pointer trails are just rediculous when using your mod.

wineD3D.exe you are linking to does not contain ddraw.dll. where are you getting it?

latest versions of wined3d do not include ddraw.dll, have to go back to v1.1.38. all three dlls are included in that package.

but this doesn't offer a fix. the original horrible fps reoccurs and it will not display total fullscreen. 90% of my taskbar is visible and there is no way to alt-tab or minimize the game whatsoever.

tried using the dll files along with your drawfix but that just makes it not-quite-fullscren, horrible fps, and mouse trails.

is there no mod or fix to layer on top of your pst-drawfix to fix the mouse trails while using your mod?

okay, last post.

the version of the weidu drawfix linked to on your first post here is different than the ie_drawfix linked to later in the thread. the first does not work very well no matter what settings or dlls i use.

the later ie_drawfix linked on this page(6) installed without cursor artifact fix works great. with cursor artifact fix causes even worse pointer trails. wine dlls cause fullscreen to not work correctly and window management totally impossible.

using your link: http://bitpatch.com/ie_ddrawfix.html it runs at a good 45fps with no trails. 1080p.

sorry for the late replay, and the confusion.
I've updated the OP to now point at ie_ddrawfix
I've also added a link to newer versions of wined3d that include ddraw.dll.

also dgvoodoo2 now supports ... infinity engine games.
