After two playthroughs, I can still say I hold my opinion that Aveline and Varric are the best companions, but I'm also ok with Isabella and Merrill, and mixed about Anders. Fenris is a joke of a character and it's a very good thing he is optional. Sebastian felt more like an 'NPC you can put in your party' instead of a companion. The Hawke siblings are not that bad either.

Personally I found both Merrill and Varric to be utterly priceless characters and I loved seeing the interesting dialogue those two brought to the party.
For favorite though I have to go with Merrill because firstly she is cute, secondly you have to love the comments she makes all throughout the game, makes me lol so much. Also she's the only female love interesting in the game who isn't a slut. No offense to any who actually liked the pirate lady.

Favorite - I guess Varric. At least he had a personality.
