Baldur's Gate used to be one of my favorite games. I haven't played it in the last five years, and I've now discovered a whole bunch of awesome mods I've never played before.

For my first playthrough, I'm going to pick up all the good-aligned characters that you get early in the game: Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc and Dynaheir. It got me wondering what happens to Khalid, who starts Shadows of Amn dead. Does he carry over to BG2 normally? Is dead-Khalid's story removed from BG2? What happens to other NPCs that didn't normally carry over into the sequel?

Thank you.

Spoilers.

The game designers didn't have an elegant transfer solution; regardless of your class or alignment, the game assumes you finished the game with Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc, and Dynaheir in your group. Khalid and Dynaheir are always dead. The loss of Khalid in particular devastated me when I was a kid, and it put me off the game for years.

There's a mod that gives to option of resurrecting Khalid and Dynaheir in the end of Throne of Bhaal, and I've read suggestions for a surviving-Khalid NPC mod, but in general, their deaths are too integral to the plot of various Bioware and mod-added NPCs and plotlines to merit serious thought. It would involve intensive rearrangement of the game's structure.

A lot of the original game's NPCs are present on some level, but in general, only the ones that join you or show up in mods have more than a casual recognition of you. Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc, Edwin, and Viconia are still joinable characters in the vanilla game. Branwen and Xan appear in the tutorial, and Xan is available in the form of a mod at PPG. Faldorn shows up as an opponent in a moderately sized Shadow Druid subplot. Ajantis dies in the Windspear Hills quest, and I've seen a mod on a smaller site that makes him a playable character. Coran and Safana are part of a subplot in the Tethyrian forest. Tiax is locked up in an asylum as part of the mainstream plot, and is playable via a mod. Garrick is involved in a weird little tribute to Cyrano de Bergerac in the Temple District of Athkatla. Montaron and Xzar are involved in a Harper plot. Quayle is running the circus in Waulkeen's Promenade, and I've seen him offered in a mod. An unplayable Eldoth shows up as part of a mod. Oh, and there's a wonderful Kivan mod located at G3. Xzar and Tiax can be resurrected by the same mod that brings back Khalid and Dynaheir. There might be more. I guess it assumes you traveled with most of them for a really short amount of time then ended up with the ones it presents you in the first dungeon.

I'm in the process of making a Khalid mod for BGII to rectify this.
Next thing on my wishlist would be Dynaheir mod and then Coran & Safana...
