hello, just revisited this game after 18 months, don't think anything has changed. However now when I start a new character at candlekeep for tales of the sword coast, the character always starts at level 7 and wont't start at level 1 (ranger archer - 6 proficiency slots and mega hit points).

I have followed these starting instructions but to no avail:

"When you play Baldur?s Gate II, you will arrive at the main menu where you would normally choose to play Shadows of Amn or Throne of Bhaal. Notice that the Shadows of Amn button has been replaced by a Baldur?s Gate button. Click on this button, and then click Single Player, then New Game. This will take you to the character generation screen, where you will create a level 1 character or import an existing character. Your character will then start in Candlekeep."

How to fix this?

This is my weidu log file:

// Log of Currently Installed WeiDU Mods
// The top of the file is the 'oldest' mod
// ~TP2_File~ #language_number #component_number // [Subcomponent Name -> ] Component Name [ : Version]
~SETUP-BGT.TP2~ #0 #0 // Baldur's Gate Trilogy - Core: 1.07
~SETUP-BGTMUSIC.TP2~ #0 #1 // Baldur's Gate Trilogy - Music -> Hybrid Baldur's Gate/Shadows of Amn/Throne of Bhaal Music
~WIDESCREEN/WIDESCREEN.TP2~ #0 #0 // Widescreen Mod -> for the original Infinity Engine (CHOOSE THIS!): Widescreen Mod v3.02
~SETUP-XPMOD.TP2~ #0 #11 // Quest XP Reduction -> Reduce to 75%

I also have in place the no-cd patch.

Thanks

Can someone give a link to the manual XP patch? looks like it wasn't applied correctly, User Account Control, or you managed to somehow restore an unpatched copy of BGMain.exe.

yeah maybe, thanks. at some point it went a bit strange as well, prompting me to insert the cd (to start the game) when I already had the no-cd patch applied (fixed that by swapping out the old bgmain.exe and replaced that with the no-cd patch bgmain.exe). However the problem with starting at level 7 existed before that stage. maybe it is all just completely messed up!

This ? No need to answer, if it's just a "yes".

Well, you caused the level 7 thing by replacing the BGMain.exe, why you had to do so is probably either because you didn't have a full install or that your baldur.ini still refers to the play CD's in the [Alias] 'es.

ok further to advice above, this is what i did:

installed xpatch and reset xp level from it's current high starting value to 0. I started the game and xp starting level was correctly reduced to 0, so that fixed that problem. I exited out of the game.

then, I had to re-install widescreen mod. This appeared to install correctly, but when I tried to start game, I was again prompted to 'insert the cd', when I already had the no-cd patch applied.

I can only assume therefore that the cause of all of these problems is the widescreen mod, which is somehow corrupting (or overwriting) the bgmain.exe file each time it is installed (or reinstalled). Note that when I played this game 18 months ago, I did attempt to install the widescreen mod, but for some reason could not get it to work. However the rest of the game played correctly with bgt mod, except at the lower default screen resolution (800 x 600 with bgt mod). (My monitor supports up to 1600 x 1200).

Well the game works perfectly well on the lowest unsupported resolution, but after that the others will not work well or at all, so I would advice to use the 1024x768.

Or go with this:
This install order:
Reinstall the whole BGII game so it's a clean install(uninstall the game, then remove the game directory and everything in it), patch the game to v26498.
Start the game so it quick saves in the First dungeon, or at the ToB Forest.
And then these:
BGII Fixpack
BGT-WeiDU
BGTMUSIC
XPMOD
Widescreen mod. (latest version, should be v3.04)

at what stage should I install the no-cd patch? i.e remove the bgmain.exe that prompts for the cd to start the game and replace that with the patched bgmain.exe that doesn't require the cd

Don't, use this... if it works, I myself use a CD image. As the linked tool remakes the BGMain.exe not to require the CD, it doesn't contain a BGMain.exe . And of course after the Widescreen mod, if it doesn't work, then use a CD.

I think I did say that already... Any way:

at what stage should the linked tool be used?

After the Widescreen mod.

I did a clean install, patched, took a back-up copy of the clean install, and then installed bgt fix pack, but when I try to install the bgt mod, I type in the required directory (at the prompt) but it says 'directory not recognised' (or something). the bgt installation program is not recognising the directory that bgII - SoA is installed to i.e.

c:\program files\black isle\BII - SoA

I went back and played soa and made a 'quick save' and proper save, but still get 'directory not recognised'. Is there any way to check my installation?

Edit - but when I type in this directory:

c:\program files\black isle\baldur's gate

the bgt setup installation program do appear to install correctly.

so I finished installation process now, it seems to be working ok. I installed bgfixpack and bgt mod and also xpmod. I did not install bgt music mod or widescreen mod. The bgt mod had to be installed to the 'baldur's gate' folder directory on the 'C' drive, because it would not install to the 'BGII - SoA' directory. I used 'no-cd patch' on 'BGMain.exe' straight after the initial clean installation of the game.

had to restart pc afterwards as it had become very sluggish (despite having quad core processor and 4gb ram)

c:\program files\black isle\BGII - SoA

I see a potential trouble here, which Operation System do you have ?
If it's Windows XP SP3, Vista or 7, you need to install the game to anywhere else than this specific directory. Why, read this...

I am running windows xp sp3, but the 32 bit version (not 64 bit), so should be ok. Perhaps a simple in-game test can be suggested to ensure that the changes have taken effect.
