Possible to change Big World mods without full installation
#1
Posted 23 January 2011 - 09:18 AM
I'd like to make some minor adjustments to one of my installed mods, in particular adding the un-nerfed THAC0 and spell progression tables from SCSII, which I already have installed but without these options.
Is this possible in any way without having to go through the full reinstallation of Big World from scratch? If I just run the SCSII installer again over the top will this work, or is this going to destroy my installation?
Thanks,
Matthew.

This probably means that Tcl wasn't installed properly.
I also tried running it from a sub directory of BG2:

Any idea what I'm missing?

This is my init.tcl (renamed as init.txt); let me know if dropping it in your BG2 directory (and renaming it back to init.tcl) is enough to get that working.

Could the problem be that the drive is not C, which usually has the OS, which has common libraries that weigui.exe might require(dependencies)...That's about as much work I'm willing to do trying to blindly get obsolete libraries to work. I'll see if I can release something stabler.
Of course that might not have anything to do with this, as I don't know a cheese about this.

PS: maybe I found a copy of ActiveState tcl 8.4. A full install of that should be enough to get WeiGUI to run.

If I can adjust those tables by editing text files then I'll try doing that for an easy fix. I was very careful on this install to get everything how I wanted it and that's the only thing I need to change at the moment.
I'll also try that TCL exe (nice Google-fu) tonight because it sounds like weigui is a useful utility to get going. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit but hopefully the x86 exe will work.
If worst comes to the worst I can wait for a new release as I'm only level 5 on my new playthrough so still a good way off the TOB level tables
I'd also like to say thanks for all your efforts producing such a useful and stable set of mods and utilities. I haven't had a single CTD or so much as a glitch in over 20 hours of play which is much more than I can say for my heavily modded copy of Oblivion!
Cheers,
Matthew.

That Tcl program installed - I had to chuck it in my \BG\ directory. Thanks for that.
Weigui.exe now starts up fine, however I'm not sure how to reconfigure the options for SCSII using this tool? I clicked on one of the SCSII options and clicked "reinstall" (I've backed up my \BG\ directory), but wasn't sure if anything happened, and couldn't see a way to reselect the right options.
Could you tell me how to change the options for the SCSII mod without inadvertently nuking my installation?
Thanks
Matthew.

'Reinstall an existing mod' is nigh useless (it can only be used to force reinstall of a component, without changing its position). To add a new option from SCSII (or whatever), you need to choose 'Install another mod' even if you're adding a new component from a mod already installed. Pick a mod name, a language, one or more components, and a position (refer to the BWP PDF to get a general idea of the correct position). To remove an option, choose 'Uninstall a mod' and choose the components you wish to remove. Once you're done selecting, double- and triple- check that everything is to your liking, and click on 'Proceed to setup'. WeiGUI is now 'not responding' - that's expected, DON'T close it, just wait for some hours and it'll close itself once it has finished its work.
Yes, I know that WeiGUI is so unintuitive that it's almost unusable. I have a skeleton of a replacement written in Java, but no willingness to actually finish it. If anybody is interested, I'll upload the source and answer as many questions as possible, but other than that I will wash my hands of it.

(At least that's what I hear sometimes and was told when I started with the BWP.)
So you can edit an install to a certain extend, but not as much as you did.
As a matter of fact, you hosed the install since BGT failed to install, so there's no BG1 in your installation any more. I'd suggest use the backup that was possibly made or reinstall the games from scratch and then install the mods again.
Some mods are skipped if some dependencies are not fulfilled or conflicts are detected. So those mods are skipped.

This is why I suggested just editing the 2da files in a text editor instead. It's easy - just consult the IESDP for formats.
And that's what I'm going to do, I just thought it was worth giving WeiGui a go. My install is just a BWP install btw, I haven't even run the cleanup batch files so everything should still be there. Obviously something is awry though. I'm averse to a full reinstall because I don't want to lose my save files.
Thanks for your help everyone, the 2da files look quite straightforward so I'll just edit those and put them in the override folder.
Cheers,
Matthew.

You have to reinstall at least the BWP-stuff. And you have to get a clean install back up if you want to do that.
You cannot use those saves right now since you killed the order of the Dialog.tlk when you tried to install new content and/or a mod failed to reinstall.
(If not, please correct me -- they told me that the file is just a sequential one with content appended and text is fetched by the row-numbers. And some line-numbers are stored in the save, so there are faults there. Also, you may have some states in your save that are not defined in your game any more.)
If you don't have a backup of the folder before you ran the WeiGui, you have no chance to continue at the current state. If you manage to reinstall exactly the same way as it was before, you can.
