I've been thinking a lil about things, and just wondering, is there anyone keen to play BG2 Multiplayer?

That said, what Installs would you guys recommend with a Multiplayer Game ?

Of course everyone who wants to play together would probably want to have their own Install, but I was thinking that maybe everyone would like to standardise a "standard Multiplayer Install" so that you know, we can all get jiving more easily :)

Those interested to play also, please sign up here. Think of it as a Connect Group or something lol.

I would play with you if you'll accept a total newbie. :D

As for what mods it would have to be whatever makes the game better.

I would love to play a Multiplayer game but do I really have to make a fresh install?  :(

That would remove all the tweaks and mods I've so painstakingly added, is there any way for making a new install in another part of the HD?

Of course there is! There's no way I would install a new install just to play multiplayer. I will try to dig out the link and put it somewhere here also.

No need:

8. Setting up multiple working Infinity Engine- game copies.
To have multiple copies of the same game is useful when you are trying to archive the most remotely resembling BG2 game ever, AKA megamoding, the problem is just that the game(ToB) is build up not to be modified at first glance as it uses the Windows InstallShield that doesn't allow to have multiple copies of the same program.
This can be circumvented by copying all the original game files(from full installation) that take about 2,5 GB's + cache, and then using the BGMain.exe to create quick icon from it to the desktop to use to start the game, not from the baldur.exe that relies to the InstallShields programs registers to start the BGMain.exe to initiate the start the game. :P The other factor that is restricting the multiple installations, is the baldur.ini's [Alias]'es, which need to be redirected for the copy to work independently. But there is a trick for that, it should be modified after all the other modification is over, -unless you have a mod that needs the all the general files, and then the redirection needs to be done so that you first direct all to the current folder and then you later remove the 4 last-, as only the two first columns are need to direct to the current directory for all games, when the modifying has been finished. So the trick is, you can actually just delete the additional 1,49GB's of files that are in the CD2, CD3, CD4 and CD5 directories, as you can redirect them from the original copy of the games files. This also works for the Black Isles Fallout games.
For a storage purpose, we recommend that you store the backup game folder in a .rar archive, this makes it extra-fast to extract.

&

3.5. The best ways to reinstall everything.
There comes times that you see, it's best to just start over...

3.5.1 BiG World Setup.vbs's... The "BiG World Setup.vbs" has inbuilt system for that, all you have to do first is to make sure you have a clean install before you start the "BiG World Setup.vbs" for the first time, as it will ask if it can make a backup for itself, this takes only about 50 MB's, which is really small space, so you go and answer yes... next, you need to install some WeiDU-mods to mess up the clean install. :P
Then the "BiG World Setup.vbs" will recognize that you have installed one or more mods, so when you continue to the installation of the mods, it will give you option to continue, quit or reinstall the whole thing, to which you reply ... and the "BiG World Setup.vbs" will eventually remove all the previously installed mods, their mod folders, their files etc. so you'll start from fresh install, first by extracting the files from the mods.
3.5.2 The second best way... have; the currently registered game folder that is a clean, patched and already started game; made into a backup .rar archive before you modify it anyway, and if you run into a situation you need to use the backup, delete the old game folder before you unrar the archive to the same location.
3.5.3 The third best way... that is if you have not used a clean install and done the clean backup routine, or do not wish to use the BWS...
Is to uninstall the whole BG2 game, delete the whole game folder (but remember to move the BiG World Downloads folder to somewhere else first, if it was inside the game folder), and then reinstall, and do remember to re-patch the new game, and then make a .rar backup of the game folder.
3.5.4 The forth best way... in my opinion, is to use the premade backup in here. So read the instructions there throughly !
But the best way is to mix and match. So that you use the ¤1,¤2,¤3,¤4 and the question #8's answer ways, depending on what exactly you need to do.

Of course you could use the #8th's method to save your current game to another folder, then uninstall the game, and clean the game folder and then just reinstall a clean game and make a backup from that so you wouldn't ever need to do that again.

And to answer the original question, sorry, I don't like to play multiplayer games...

I have heard of many BG2 mods, but never of "the Unofficial Patch", so ??
There's couple fixpacks, but they are just that...

Here's some links for reference

Minimum-to-Full Installation
http://forums.gibber...?showtopic=6407

If you are using a Windows OS, I strongly recommend that you install OUTSIDE the Program Files folder. This means C:\BG2 is fine, C:\Program Files\BG2 is not fine. For some reason, it seems harder to unlock the BALDUR.INI edits in Program Files. This is something I experienced with my Cousin's OS, but not my own.

Patch etc where required, then Back Up the Installation. (thanks to Jarno Mikkola for the Link!)
http://forums.pocket...ic,17555.0.html

Then from there, to a Multiple Installation...
http://forums.gibber...p?showtopic=291

I will try to run some experiments to see if I can "restore" my game to original without a "clean" backup and without reinstalling my entire BG2.

This would be fun! I've never played the game with other on-line players before. Of course, my main concern would be at what time of day the play sessions would occur. Also, as I'm on a Mac, there would be those amusing random CTDs to endure, which may annoy and inconvenience the other player(s). I suppose the host would decide which characters are acceptable in the party.

I voted, btw :) It will be interesting to see if this does indeed take off, even if I don't get to participate.

Cheers,

This would be so much fun. I'm definitely going to be involved in it sooner or later, but I'm unbelievably busy at the moment and that's unlikely to change anytime soon.

Edit: Busy. I'm busy, not 'bust.'

Zyraen's Miscellany was originally included for Spell Progression for Rangers / Paladins (bards not required as there's unnerfed table from BG2 Tweaks).
The rest were included as an Ease of Multiplayer thing :) Uberweapon is especially handy for re-clearing places when the last save was some time ago. The XP Evener is for Bioware NPCs that join, they will basically level up to match the Player1.

The Reaver is one of the classes I'm a bit ambivalent about. That said it can easily be uninstalled.

That said, this is just my suggested list :) Comments feel free!
(note universal weaponmastery etc are not in, things that would bend the balance towards casters)

I'm also considering to install things like Weimer's Item Upgrades, would you guys like that for an MP game?

Since I think most people (myself included) would like to have one single Character, decided to have the following references.

Below are all just suggestions based on what is currently in the game, its really up to you guys to decide what sort of characters we want to go with :)

================

Character Stats

As reference, taking from the higher Stats of BG2 Characters...

Stats in order of STR DEX CON INT WIS CHR

Sarevok - 18/100 17 18 17 10 15 = 95 points
Keldorn - 17 9 17 12 16 18 = 89 points
Yoshimo - 17 18 16 13 10 14 = 88 points
Valygar - 17 18 16 10 14 10 = 85 points
Viconia - 10 19 8 16 18 14 = 85 points
Aerie - 10 17 9 16 16 14 = 82 points
Anomen - 18 10 16 10 12 13 = 79 points

Hence, I would estimate a "suitable" PC to be about 87 - 92 points.

====================

XP Levels

Start of Game - 89K (pretty obvious...)

After Irenicus' Dungeon - 170K
- based approx lowest level Aerie6.CRE at 160K and Anomen6.CRE at 64K+110K

Middle of Chapters 2-3 - 700K
- my own estimate (lol) based on before and after values. Figure this is a good starting point for SoA.

Start of Spellhold : 1.20M
- based on Imoen's XP of 220K+600K (Imoen211) & 220K+1.2 M (Imoen213)

Late Game BG2 : 2.50M
- based on Keldor14.CRE and Valy14.CRE and Mazzy15.CRE

End-of-SoA : 2.95 M
- based on original SoA XP Cap

Note, if you are altering your XP manually and using Dual Class, ensure the Inactive Class' XP value is also captured in the XP total :)

====================

Equipment

NOW this is tricky. Assuming an entry point in mid Chapter 2-3, I suggest everyone start with +2 Weapons and ring of protection +1 (1 only), Cloak of Protection +1, Amulet of Protection +1, Helm of Glory or Helm of Balduran, and of course Boots of Speed (doesn't EVERYONE?).

Other Items that come to mind...
- Ring of Regeneration (actually 1 in the whole party works, and you can just dump extras. or keep 1 for all so its convenient and don't have to keep asking for it to be handed around)
- Helm of Charm Protection. everyone who can use a helmet should have one
- Bracers of Defence AC 7 : for classes that can't wear armor.

From there, to sort out the proficiencies...

In theory, my opinion is that this would be what to look for in terms of weapons and proficiencies in a party that does not have too many overlapping options. It also serve as a good reference what weapons have more high-level versions available for Dual-Wielding.

This is based on my knowledge of ingame +3 & above weapons available. Missile weapons focused on infinite ammunition and enchanted +3 & above. I have excluded items that are class specific and for ToB only from the calculation.

MELEE
1x Two-Handed Sword, Paladin (Carsomyr)
3x Two-Handed Sword, Non-Paladin (Lilarcor, Soulreaver, Silver Sword, Gram the Sword of Grief in ToB)
2x Katana (Celestial Fury+3, Hindo's Doom+3)
3x Long Sword (Blade of Roses+3, Angurvadal+4, Blackrazor+3 MISCBC, The Answerer in ToB)
2x Bastard Sword (Blade of Searing+3, Foebane +3, Purifier for Paladins)
3x Scimitar (Water's Edge Scimitar +3, Yamato+4, Spectral Brand+4 )
1x Warhammer (Crom Faeyr+5, Runehammer in ToB only)
2x Short Sword (Short Sword of Mask +3, Short Sword of Backstabbing +3)
3x Axe (Stonefire +3, Frostreaver +3, Axe of Unyielding +3 )
2x Dagger (Pixie Prick+3, Boneblade +4, Dagger of the Star +4)
2x Mace (Skullcrusher +3, Storm Star +3)
2x Club (Blackblood +3, Club of Detonation)
1x Flail (Flail of Ages +3, Icestar +4 in ToB only)
3x Halberd (Dragon's Bane +3, Dragon's Breath +4, Wave Halberd +4, Ravager +4 only in ToB)
4x Staff (Martial Staff +3, Staff of the Magi+5, Staff of Rynn +4, Staff of the Ram +4, Staff of Woodlands for Druids)
4x Spear (Two Spear+3, Impaler +3, Ixil's Nail+4)

MISSILE
1x Axe (Azuredge+3, Rifthome Axe if side with Bodhi, K'logarath+4 in ToB only)
2x Short Bow (Tansheron's Bow +3, Gesen Bow +4)
1x Dagger (Fire Tooth +3)
1x Dart (Crimson Dart +3)
1x Sling (Sling of Everard +5)
1x Crossbow (Firetooth +4)
0x Warhammer (Dwarven Thrower+3, only for Dwarves)

Hope I didn't miss anything out, lol.

Besides, its also fun to send the Party on Quests to gather their own gear, and then after that go straigh to progressing the plot, skipping all unnecessary quests (ie XP Galore). Hopefully that may make the game faster and more challenging.

PS : I'm also making the above reference for my own game, if I choose to start a new replay :)

I'm open to trying whatever mod installs you'd like. As this is something of an experiment, fewer mods is probably the most prudent strategy...

Well, Z and I tried connecting to each other's mp games, and we each got the same failure (Cannot connect to the mp game). Don't know why. I'm on my home system, not behind a firewall, connected via Ethernet. In the game, I chose "connect manually" (I've never tried connecting via Game Ranger before, but that's an option).

So, currently dead in the water...
