Hey everyone just got a new laptop and am trying to install Balder's Gate II, however I am having some difficulty and can't seem to find a solution so hopefully you guy's expertise can help me play my favourite game ever.

The Problem:

Basically which ever install I attempt it always 'freezes' at the file \data\CREsound.bif, at first no message occurs but if left for half an hour longer it then flashes up:

Component Transfer Error

Component: Required_data
File Group: hdo_data
File: E:\data2.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Now I bought the game on preorder when it first came out so I am aware that obviously it wasn't made with windows 7 in mind, however I am equally aware that a lot of people are playing it.

My specs are:

Windows 7 64 bit
2 gb Ram
Free space is like 100gb+
Graphics Card is whichever is standard to the laptop (Samsung RG 530) but I am sure it's competent enough (I'm playing Civ IV as we speak)
Direct X 9 is installed
And sound card again is standard, with Real Tech audio drivers (horrible)
though I have access to a soundblaster Live! (though it isn't plugged in and none of the drivers are yet installed, as it is a new laptop)

I'm not advanced at computer skills, more intermediate, so if any response could lean more on the descriptive side i'd be very grateful

*just noticed you reference the CRC error in your troubleshoot, so firstly apologies, and secondly if any of you know the steps for windows 7 to do some of the things that would be helpful (or if you could narrow down the problem to one or the other*edit*

Thanks in advance

James

Well, basically if your CD's are scathed, no one will be able to help with that... as you need to get new CD's.
But basically the Windows 7 64bit with Baldur's Gate games have no issues, if you do the standard 'old game' preparations, which I have written into here, in the second answer.

You'll want to disconnect from the internet and turn off antivirus and other memory-resident programs before installing. If your disks are scratched, you can get a cleaning/descratching device for fairly cheap.

Hey thanks for the responses, my disks are in perfect condition. I tried copying the individuals files over but that didn't work. I'll try as suggested (d/c from the internet and cancel AVG). *EDIT as well as disable UAC

I'll let you know if that doesn't resolve the problem

Thanks~

Okay so I tried disabling the UAC, I disabled my wireless and AVG (by disabling the resident shield), and also installed it into a folder in my documents (instead of programme files) and it still timed out at 46% on that file. I couldn't however seem to disable the programme compatibility feature, I typed "gpedit.msc" into the console but nothing came up? Do you have any suggestions,I don't want to lose hope! Again, the disks do not have a scratch on them, and the laptop is new and running other games fine.

Have you ever installed the game successfully? My guess is that error means there's an actual data defect on the disk. Happens sometimes even on unscratched disks.

Hey Miloch, yes I have on my old laptop. I'm starting to think I might just have to buy a new one; the game was in a box in the attic all summer while I was travelling state-side so I maybe something happened then. Thanks for everyone's help I'll try another time and if not by a copy off of amazon, I'm desperate to start playing through again. I had hoped to try playing through as a chaotic evil half-orc, or a human bard - a race/classes I'd never given thought to. I guess it will have to wait a little bit.

Hey Miloch, yes I have on my old laptop.

Well, then all you have to do is use that with few tricks, like copying the game from computer to computer, making it a clean install, and then starting it from the BGMain.exe(NOT from the baldur.exe) and there you go.

sadly my laptop broke because of a spilled glass of wine, and it has now been incinerated by the insurance company! I'll try doing it on my desktop, this may sound stupid but how do I transfer from pc to laptop? Is the most effective way to do it through wifi connection?
