Has anyone else played this game and what did you think of it? I found it very slow to start and I almost gave up before the end of chapter 1, but now I've finished it I miss it - I really enjoyed it that much. I didn't see the end coming despite the hints upon hints throughout the game and if you weren't on the ball (I wasn't fully) you'd be forgiven for wondering just what the hell is going on.

It had two things in it I've never seen before in any game at all. The first is a real sense of size in all areas - you can believe that Vizima is a big place and if you're looking out across open countryside, you can also believe that if necessary you can walk the twenty or thirty clear miles you can see. The perspective is right. Secondly, the weather effects are nothing short of gobsmacking at times. I stood in the middle of Vizima and watched a small shower of rain move across the city towards me. So what? Only that I could dodge in and out of the rainshower as it moved down the street and I found sunshine on either side of it.

The developers didn't fall into the trap of levelling up monsters as you level up either. What starts as a real bastard to kill at the beginning of the game becomes a half-hearted swing at the end of it. Which is not to say that combat gets boring - a group of low-level zombie types can still give you a run for your money if you're not careful.

The downside is too many generic/repetative faces but that said, it's not as bad as Morrowind. Also, because of that beautiful perspective, I found the search maps irritating as I wanted to climb what should be easily-climbable hills just to look out across the land.

However, what CD Projeckt did with the Aurora Engine is nothing short of amazing. If you have the patience to sit through the subtitles in the 'Making Of' videos it seems that they damn-near rebuilt it from the ground up.

I will definately be buying the sequel when it's released.

What does the "enhanced edition" consist of, exactly?

I got my copy from Steam on an £8 ($13) offer day and I think it was was worth every penny.

Hmmm.... I see it says 'enhanced stability' - I'm glad I didn't play the original version! No, no unexpected CTDs - it warns you before it dies. In my experience one of two things happens; after two-three hours you either lose the background of the main map (it turns all black) or you lose the OTS camera view. Either way, once you recognise it then it takes less than a minute to shut down and restart. Looks like a memory leak to me.

Well, I say a restart takes less than a minute. It does if you manage your savegames carefully; the more savegames you have, the longer it takes to load. Irritatingly long if you have more than about thirty savegames. With just six or so it's lightning fast.

Thanks. The upgrade seems worth it.

Ah yes the ending is quite a twist...and does tend to really make you think...not as big as a twist as in say
Spoiler
...but a good game none the less and I hear there making a second one down the road as well

Yes, Assasin of Kings, will be around momentarily.
I played the original Witcher 3 times, just to see the different choices/endings. It is indeed hard and somewhat boring in the beginning, but it's worth it.
After an eternity away from you all, I've returned.

I took the neutral path but there were times when I wondered what would happen if I took the high road or the low road - take your choice as to which is which!

I played it this summer and found it very enjoyable. Like you, I found it slow to start, but once you get into Vizima it's wonderful. I love all the private eye stuff and the autopsy in Chapter 2.
I played through twice; once to side with the Order and once taking the neutral path. I just couldn't bring myself to side with the Scoia'tel - whilst their plight is somewhat sympathetic, I can't abide terrorists.
Looking forward to the sequel.

As mentioned in the latest Good Old Games newsletter, they're selling The Witcher Enhanced Edition at a discount. It costs 4.99USD, and the offer is valid until May 26th.

I should purchase a copy, right? I've been holding off from buying this, but I don't think it'll get any cheaper than this.

Yep. I personally wouldn't recommend it, but it isn't getting any cheaper than that...

I purchased a copy today, and now I just need to find the time to actually play the game.
