Hi, so I'm a newb admittedly, but my computer won't open any of the mods that use .rar from this site, none of the other modding communities I've visited have .rar files that I've encountered, so my questions are, how do I open them, and why do you guys use them in the first place?

Look online for winrar. It should work just fine.

and why do you guys use them in the first place?

They extract very fast... faster than you can copy the files from one a folder to another... the WinRAR was there before the .7z(-ip)'s, it was smaller than .zip's and all the main competitors before the .7z's, and the WinRAR is and always shall be free(you don't have to buy the license ever, though you'll be reminded of it every time you open the program yourself). The WinRAR can also open the .7z's and most if not all .exe-self_extracting-archives, and make .zip's.

First thing I am not trying to be rude.

I have used computers for a long time, including the net.
When I run into something I have never heard of I use my fave search engine. Just like when I come across a new word
I use a word processor with a thesaurus.

sometimes it's easier to ask, and while I had already searched and found winrar, I didn't find an answer to my second question. not to mention that I didn't get winrar because I got the impression from the site that it wasn't free, or that using it was on a free "trial period" offer, neither of which I am interested, but apparently you can use it for free and that's something else I wouldn't have learned because I didn't spend a lot of time reading the winrar site.

winrar is annoyware rather than trialware - if you use it past the 30 days trial limit, you have to click through some invasive pop-ups every time you start the program, but other than that it works 100% even after years of usage.

Peazip and 7zip are probably the best. I use Peazip a little more to open a few other formats but try both and keep your favorite.
