Hey, will be a huge fan of your work once I can get my problem fixed...I have been searching around for a solution to my problem for a while with no luck - perhaps somebody can help me.

Every time my BGMain.exe file executes it instantly crashes.

It seems that my BG2 game does simply not want to run. I have done multiple clean installs in different directories and my problem still persists. After install I get to the config menu with no problem, as the baldur.exe file runs without fail. But when I finish my config and BGMain starts up, all I get is an hourglass icon next to my mouse for a brief second and then nothing.

There's no error - and it's driving me insane! I don't know what to do. I really want to play all the wonderful mods as I haven't enjoyed this game in years, and when I did it was unmodded.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Please forgive me if this is answered somewhere or is in the wrong section.

By the way, I'm using Windows XP.

Well, you aren't specifying anything that would cause this... so a list of questions is in order:
Did you install a full install, then patched the game to the latest official patch that has no Direct X content(as they are unofficial)?
Have you installed any mods?
And if so what? Open the file called WeiDU.log with Notepad and copy paste the text to these:
[spoiler]WeiDU.log's content[/spoiler]
if theres more than 10 lines... this is so we don't have to scroll the whole 10 pages...

And then open the baldur.ini file, go to the [Program Options]-header and write this to a new line:
Logging On=1
and try to reproduce the error...

always post the contents of your baldur.err in the case of crashes.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Sorry I didn't include enough information.

I'm running BG2+ToB full install on both with the latest official patch 26498 (no DirectX content as far as I know), no mods at the moment. I've installed to a different directory C:/BI/BG2 instead of the normal Program Files path.

I've also added the line to baldur.ini, ran the game again and all it posts in baldur.err is

----------Start Logging Session---------------------

Every time the game starts up and crashes.

Thanks again!

Still nothing... hmm...
What's does the baldur.ini read under the [Alias] -heared... yes, the HD0=plah, plah, plah? At least the 6 lines under that...

Under the [Alias] section it reads:

HD0:=C:\BI\BG2\
CD1:=C:\BI\BG2\CD1\
CD2:=C:\BI\BG2\CD2\;C:\BI\BG2\CD2\
CD3:=C:\BI\BG2\CD3\
CD4:=C:\BI\BG2\CD4\
CD5:=C:\BI\BG2\CD5\

Thanks!

Hmm, that shouldn't be it...

I should mention ...

I didn't need to know that...

Erhm, you do start the game from the C:\BI\BG2\BGMain.exe or a quick icon from that and not from the baldur.exe, right? Cause the baldur.exe needs the registry entry that the game is installed into it's folder... as the BGMain.exe should start the game from anywhere, but the baldur.exe starts a front-end program that uses the windows registry to find the correct BGMain.exe to start... --> always use the BGMain.exe, not the baldur.exe .

Hmm, or the highly unlikely explanation could be that if your computer has Chinese parts, that it cannot read the Western data because of Area codes... but that's very unlikely.

I do indeed start it from the actual BGMain.exe file itself in my BG2 folder.

And even though I'm in China my computer isn't Chinese!

All I can think of is either an antivirus is kicking it or (if you've done multiple clean installs) your CD is scratched or the data is otherwise corrupt.

Edit:
Solved! I feel really stupid now. The crash was because the visual settings weren't properly configured. In the test part of BGconfig it wasn't passing the RGB boxes check. Now it is and it works!

Hmm I've tried different .iso files to install the game, to no avail. My system is fairly clean too - tried disabling my antivirus (Microsoft Security Essentials) and that didn't work either!

I'd really like to play as I've read a lot about the modding community as per this post:

It really looks awesome.
