Hey ya everyone, I was returning to BG2 After a several year absence and I discovered the BiG World Project. Thinking it was an amazing idea I installed it and have had 0 issues thus far (I'm relatively computer literate and used Mods extensively for Morrowind back in the day.

My issue here is that the game slows down to a literal halt in the area with the shade lord. It's fine if I time pause PERFECTLY for the first 1 second I load a zone, I can assign movements, spells, look through my inventory etc, but the moment I hit space to resume BG2 locks up. The music plays, but if I hit the windows key/alt tab it is labeled as Not Responding. I used cheats in order to enter the Shade Lords dungeon from Umar because attempting to enter it through the area itself was impossible. However now I appear to be... stuck seeing as how the Shade Lord himself is outside in the zone?

I'm just not sure how to proceed or if any mod or combination specifically has an issue with this quest/zone.

Is there any information or specific component information that I could give in order to assist anyone with getting some help? Perhaps a save file so others could attempt to do so and check results?

Just curious and any help would be nice. Just figured this was the best place to ask.

Thanks everyone/anyone.

Just as an update

I've tried party configuration and graphic changes. Removing any mod content from bags/any mod party memebers, lowering the graphic settings, turning off nearly all graphic settings, trying window/full screen differences. The game doesn't initially lock up, i just becomes exponentially unresponsive in that area (Mouse does not move at all, nor does anything, it's as if my computer gets frozen in time); during one of my repeated trials I got the conversation to start when I attempted to go back go BG2 from when it was minimized. The conversation went smoothly and just fine, again when it went to unpaused/live the game just sat... doing nothing...

Thanks again!

BP and some of the big mods have a hosed Shade Lord, but I don't know if that's the problem here. When it locks up, do you get any message in your baldur.err file? Make sure you have "Logging On=1" in your baldur.ini to enable that (should be by default in BWP).

Hosed? I'm don't quite get what you mean about that mate.

No error or message besides "Start Logging Session" in my baldur.err file, and Logging On=1 in the ini as well.

At the moment I just used CLUA to port myself to Athkatla and I've been doing other things, the problem itself has to do with that specific area and I can't discern what the problem is.

If there is any other information I can provide please just let me know, and thanks! any help is better than nothing : )

I recently started The Big World and I have exactly the same problem. Last time, I just skipped the Umar Hills quest, but I would like an solution if possible :)

The game lags badly, it doesn't lock up... see if the answer #5 here gives you any help.

What's even worse is that you diagnose the problem wrongly, go unpaused to the Windows... come back... still unpaused... as if the lag is caused by a script running, it scoops all the resources it can trying to resolve itself(if not paused), but cannot...

I had the same problem.
Extract that file in to your override folder and it should be fine.(I think I downloaded it once from kerzenbug forums but not sure :)

I'm afraid that this does not fix it for me.

Going to set up and run a LStest to see if errant coding can be found.

I'm afraid that LStest has proved inconclusive as well as the only blocks flagged as executing are innocuous

Hmm. Well another test is from a different area that doesn't lag, CLUAConsole: CreateCreature every single creature in the laggy area file and its area script, walk around a bit after, see which one(s) lag.

I tried adjusting the speed and the cache in the BGconfig and that actually worked great for me.
Thanks Jarno.

Evidential hearing: from what to what? :D
As the default is set to 30... but there is small evidence that putting it to higher might clean problems* or cause them...
That's why the recommendation is to keep it as is.

*The explanation for this is probably related to software settings with hardware that can be corrected with the right tools, like for example the NVidia cards, without setting other things ablaze.

The wierd thing is, is that once the lag kicks in, even moving to another area does not fix it.

I've got around the whole lag on AR1400 by using MoveToArea commands and creating the shade lord elsewhere and killing him, not really satisfactory but it progresses the game.

I'll try what you suggest, I have an idea that it might be to do with the hoard of Goblins, Wolves and A Gnome that my area script (AR1400.BCS) creates on it's first run through as I've managed to kill everything else on this map before the lag grinds my system to oa halt.

Hi Jarno,
Talking of Nvidia cards do you know of a fix to correct the blacking out of the screen when external processes update the screen when the game is in full screen mode? It can be a right pain having to run the pointer over the screen to force a refresh, I know that by hiding and unhiding the interface it refreshes the screen but you can only do this when in the main play window.

Well, the problem is that when you use the MoveToArea cheat, the script in the area you just left is still running... ... so your self-fix won't fix a thing, but just makes things worse ...
You have to exit using the worldmap to disable the area scripts, just like it's hinted in the inventory management point of the mini_info_pack...

Erhm, I am not sure what you are exactly talking about... but I don't think there's much you could do but go back to the main window and do it there... as I suppose that you are talking about the Operation System opening an unrelated note window while you are playing, and so blanking the spot it comes into, I have the same thing in the VLC-player and there really isn't much I know that would help there.

I totally avoid going to area AR1400 by using MoveToArea... Hence the scripts do not run, but what I was talking about there was not using MoveToArea but leaving the area by the normal means, specifically I entered the area through the wearwolf cave having come from the Drow/Drider base, exited to AR1400 met anarth and followed it back into the cave, the lagg still creprt up and killed the game.

The Problem is is that the game blanks the entire screen irrelevant of the size of area the operating system overwrites, and the game does not redraw it, but still it sounds like you've never hear of it so nevermind.

Thanks Anyway.

Then this does sound like a scripting thing or a variable gone awry. I'm surprised the buggered script detector didn't come up with something, but maybe it can't find everything.

That is from Aurora, but it shouldn't be in ar1400.bcs but rather ar1404.bcs. I've never heard of it causing lag (certainly not *uncurable* lag that doesn't go away). It is virtually identical to another goblin encounter in ar9000 (Larswood) if you're on BGT, so you could try seeing if that lags you too.
