BioWare, an EA studio and FUNimation Entertainment, the leading distributor of Japanese animation in North America, announced today an agreement to create an anime feature film adapted from BioWare?s critically-acclaimed fantasy Action RPG franchise Dragon Age. Production of the Dragon Age anime movie is slated to begin in May 2010, with a home video release in 2011. Executive producing the film are Bioware?s Executive Producer MarkDarrah and Creative Director Mike Laidlaw, as well as FUNimation?s Fukunaga and Director of Original Entertainment Chris Moujaes.

?Anime is a great medium for us to continue the robust Dragon Age story,? said Mark Darrah, Executive Producer for the Dragon Age franchise. ?Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we are delivering the exceptional quality and entertainment value that our Dragon Age fans expect.?

?We are thrilled to be working with EA and BioWare on the production of the Dragon Age anime feature,? said Gen Fukunaga, President and CEO of FUNimation. ?We are going to be bringing the classic visual and storytelling techniques found in anime to create a film that will extend the narrative of the world BioWare has created.?

I'm kinda surprised it took them this long to get around to it, myself. I mean they've completely done themselves in already with a horde of DLCs as is, an anime film is really just the icing. But whatever, it's their money and fan-base to waste... or gain, whichever comes first someone's going to be alienated either way.

Add onto it, the possible fact third parties have already engaged in such off-side projects, as is par for the course. I'm just wondering if this one will follow the C&D protection method as some of their other titles have.

The only way I would be satisfied (regarding this matter, at least) would be if they followed the story 6 separate times, with 6 separate characters, all making different choices for different reasons. And that would be a HUMONGOUS waste of money, no doubt.

Dunno 'bout everyone else, but I have absolutely no problem with anime. The pairing of a western title with an eastern medium is kinda weird, I suppose, but it could work and, who knows, if it's some sort of cool side-story, I might even give it a watch.

We aren't necessarily the target audience for this, anyway. If it works, then it means a potentially bigger fanbase to support BioWare's continued production of good core games. If not, then it means some lost money and (maybe) a lesson learned. Either way, it shouldn't ruin my gaming experience (DLC might do so, but that's why I don't touch most of it ).

I admit, I agree with Galsic. Getting an anime of Dragon Age isn't meant to appeal to the gamers, it's meant to try to find more people and get them to become gamers.

I also have no problems with Anime - it can be an amazing medium, and it's not all cutesy animation either. Modern Japanese anime also includes Death Note and other gritty, violent, and mature titles that would be able to do Dragon Age justice. Granted, I don't know much about FUNimation so I don't know how they'd do it. But I can't really see Bioware agreeing to let Dragon Age be remodelled into a Sailor Moon clone.

Also, I have to say I see them making a movie of it as actually being good. The whole 'making movies out of games' thing, in my eyes, actually invests games with a level of public acknowledgement. People know that books can be filled with richness, and that movies can be art, but the public don't often see the same of games.

Of course, that approach is denigrated by the fact that most movies made from games are terrible because people don't appear to realise that gamers have high standards (as we should). Still, if they make a good anime out of this, I'll be very happy.

Yeah, absolutely, although it might actually be more about getting people who play other game genres to try RPGs as well. I think it would be pretty hard to find someone who would watch this and doesn't already play some games.

I fully understand BioWare's (or EA-BioWare's) decision to develop the franchise, because that's just good business, but understanding and liking something are two very different things. Thus, on personal level, I dislike the move, because I'm seeing RPGs become more and more mainstream, which will inevitably result in a "lighter" RPG experience for the all too obvious reasons (read: dumbing it down for the masses).

I'm not surprised. Although I don't know how much worse it can get if you've seen the D&D movie.

I never watch game-based movies, so I care not. That, and even while I do allow for such possibility, I know I most certainly will NOT watch a game-based ANIME.
Still, I think they will not necessarily fail utterly, as a Bioware game, all epic about itself (or so I heard, haven't played it yet), is eaiser to port than Obsidian's KOTOR2 or MotB.

Does anyone remember the movie "Dungeons and Dragons"? It was targeted at a young audience, but it was still awful.

If you've got an idea for a game, make a game. If you've got an idea for a movie, make a movie. Trying to milk one enough to produce the other doesn't usually end well. That said, "Pirates of the Carribean" was based on an amusement park ride. So nevermind.

I am a fan of a lot of anime. However I've found it difficult to like anime or movies that are based on a game. They are, often, too cutesy and focused on a younger demographic.(children)
I like anime clever and at least a little dark.
Also, if BioWare/EA decide to focus the story around a male protagonist that is supposed to be representing the player character, I will not watch the movie on principle.
