I had some spare time today, so I decided to look into extracting the Mass Effect 2 music files from the game data archives, and here's the guide I came up with:

  • Download ME2 Audio Extractor by Rick
  • Extract the zip archive into an empty folder and run the program
  • Click the "Music" button
  • Click the "Start" button
  • Choose an empty folder for the music files to be extracted into
  • Wait for the program to complete and close it
  • You should now have 366 music files in ogg format
Depending on whether you prefer ogg or not, you may want to convert the music files into some other format. The music files are extracted in folders, but the folder names are pretty self-explanatory.

I've found three versions of the Mass Effect 2 main theme in the extracted files - the regular one, a version with no guitar, and yet another version with no guitar or piano.

  • Original - "mus_im_theme"
  • No guitar - "mus_im_theme_no_gtr"
  • No guitar, piano - "mus_im_theme_no_gtrpiano"

Nice! Do they have all the ME1 tunes you can play in the captain's cabin?

I'm not entirely sure, but I think there might be a few. I've got the ME1 original soundtrack on CD, so I haven't paid much attention. The OST is missing some great tracks though, so I've extended it by extracting some more music from my ME1 installation. I just posted an additional guide on how to extract the ME1 music files, so feel free to check it out.

The programme won't work for me for some reason. Every time I open it it, I get a message telling me the programme has encountered an error, and closes.

It works fine for me on XP Pro 32 bit, so I can't really help you there.

Wow, thanks so much for this post, I can't believe I didn't see it before (I found it through a Google search, if you can believe that).

Cal, this does let you grab the ME1 tunes that are played in the Captain's Cabin, they're extracted in the "wwise_nor_music" folder, there's a bunch of "Shepard's Radio" files.
