I've selected Stories Bones Tell and ran my mouse cursor all over the pool of blood in the dismembered crypt and haven't found him. Can somebody tell me where I should be looking harder?

You don't actually use the Stories Bone Tell skill, ever. It only activates within dialogue. Unselect that skill, then run the mouse over the pool and you should see it become clickable in several places, give that a shot.
And no, Gris's stash doesn't actually appear anywhere, unless it's one of the very easily findable crates with loot that most people would pick up on their first entry into the area.
