This seems to be a big, well-known, and apparently unresolved issue that has been brought up ad-nauseum in other sites, and I don't know how to deal with it.
I'm not even gonna bother asking y'all to help me troubleshoot this, though I am curious to know if any of y'all had the same problem (and perhaps how you dealt with it if you did). Perhaps some of you have the downloaded version from Steam or somesuch and it works fine? Though I really wanna play ME1 before ME2, I'm 'bout ready to scrap what I have :/ .
I wasted two days in this bs. What a pain in the arse .

Are you sure your computer can run it? What are your specs?
Are you using XP or Vista? Apparently, with Vista, you have to make sure that you're running the program "as an administrator" (which can be done by right-clicking on the program, and there's a compatibility tab, you have to tick the "run as an administrator" block, or so I've read).

How long are you waiting when the game doesn't respond? Because at least for me, ME1 loads extremely slowly, but it functions normally once it actually starts.
For me, too, apparently. Yeah, I usually waited a minute or so; certainly was expecting a more immediate response. I'm such an impatient lout .
Thank you both for the suggestions . Hopefully, all problems are resolved now, so I suppose I'll go ahead and start with ME1. And hopefully get somewhere in it (my trial run through ME2 suggests ME1'll also take some get'n used to).

On a related note, the game also takes a long time to restore if I alt-tab out of it - I used to think it would crash at that point, but it turns out it just needs another decade or so to load back up.
