I've played through the original Baldur's Gate twice, and about half of Baldur's Gate 2 (for shame, I know) and am currently about 1/2 through a third BG playthrough in BGT, trying to do the entire BG1 and 2 this time.

Are any of the big mods for BGT (DSoTSC, Check the Bodies, etc) good or worth it? I'm kind of turned off by the idea of adding 100 new and probably unbalanced non-D&D spells to the game, along with ridiculously overpowered items, so I didn't install any of them. Is this actually the case? Actually, if there was a way to remove the "new" spells and items and just play the quests and areas, that would be perfect probably.

Are the big mods actually any good, though? I remember back when DSoTSC came out, for example, there were a lot of people that thought it was terrible. I know it'd probably be hard to get a completely unbiased answer here ( :P ) but I'm still wondering..

I know that some or all of them have to be installed from the beginning.

The DSOTSC is pretty overpowered itemwise, but has some good action packed dungeon crawls which are lacking in BG1, and if you install it with the bp-balancer you don't get any of the cheesy items.
I havent played ntotsc yet (even though i always have it installed) and secret of bonehill is ok, but its a bit dull for my tastes. There are loads of new areas however and apart from the ridiculous 'mspaint' guardhouse, they are actually all pretty well done.

Out of the new big mods for BG2 i've only really played the TDD but i can say its definitely worth it the quests are good and of a decent length, no crazy XP and the items are nice and balanced. You don't actually see that many new spells, and if you have divine remix installed you should only see the new wizard spells, in which case you can choose whether to have them or not.

no crazy XP

I assume you actually did the setup and install with the BiG World Setup, cause the XP without it can be kinda problematic...

Excuse me? TDD has a ton of new spells (either useless or overpowered) - so many in fact that a Ranger/Cleric cannot see all of his spells (without tob_hacks) and a Sorceror cannot choose Stone Skins until he gets the 2nd or 3rd Sorc spell pick. Also, one of the TDD quests begins with a fifteen minutes cutscenes where a prison guard rapes Viconia... and she never mentions the fact ever after.

^^ Sorry i thought it was a good mod. The best out of any of the big mods i've played. I said with divine remix you don't see many TDD cleric spells (you rightly said about sorceror's though, hadnt thought of that hardly ever play sorcerors), the wizard ones seem to be few and far between. The xp for quests is ok, say 150k unless i'm really mistaken across the whole party by the end of a big quest (not for each party member, so around 25k each in quest xp), the same as if you had done any of the other quests like windspear at the beginning of the game. That is without the xp balancer, even less if you have that on.

I wasnt aware of any cutscene with vicona, i don't think i've taken her in any of my big world parties thusfar.

if you guys hate it so much, especially you bigg because you must know far more than me about the various big mods, why is it in the recommended install for BWP? The spells i've seen from tdd seem to mostly be useless, so i don't use them, there are other mods that have crazy spells that are far more detrimental to the game in my opinion anyways.

I don't have the slightest idea. Probably because it's the less worst of all big BG2 mods.

... and also maybe cause it's probably the most tested megamod in the BWP (and I think Hoppy takes special care to make it compatible :)) ... and also cause it's entirely optional (through the BWS) whether you wanna install it or not :P

Remember, being in standard doesn't mean the mod's required to play the game :D
